Руководитель Channel Islands Coop описал карьерные перспективы в розничной торговле и ключевые качества лидеров

Channel Islands Coop chief retail operations officer Stephen Forrester reflects on his career and the opportunities in the industry AS chief retail operations officer at the Channel Islands Coop, Stephen Forrester has spent his career working across every aspect of retail, from stores and operations to buying, logistics and leadership. Having started on the shop floor while studying, he has developed into a leader with a passion for people, believing that great retail careers are built on curiosity, accountability and investing in others. Here, he shares his career journey, leadership lessons and explains why retail remains one of the most rewarding industries to work in. Can you tell us about your career journey and what first drew you into retail? Retail has always been part of my life. I worked in stores throughout my A-levels and university, and after graduating I knew it was where I wanted to build my career. I loved the pace, the people and the fact that no two days were ever the same. Joining a graduate programme gave me experience across operations, buying, logistics, marketing and stores, helping me understand how every part of the business comes together to deliver for customers. One of the biggest influences on my career was an exceptional leader called Barbara. She taught me that leadership isn’t about job titles; it’s about the example you set, the standards you uphold and how you make people feel. Those lessons have stayed with me throughout my career. Did you always see yourself building a career in retail? Not necessarily, but once I experienced the variety and opportunities retail offers, I never looked back. Every role has brought different challenges and valuable lessons. I’ve been fortunate to work with leaders who invested in my development and encouraged me to think differently. One thing I’ve learned is that the best leaders never stop learning. Staying curious, open-minded and willing to listen has been key to my own progression. What are the biggest lessons you have learned? Without question, people come first. If you invest in your colleagues, support them and create an environment where they can thrive, they’ll achieve amazing things for customers and the business. I’ve also learned the importance of accountability. Great leaders take ownership, learn from setbacks and move forward together. Sometimes it’s the smallest things, such as taking time to say good morning or asking how someone is doing, that build trust and create strong teams. Why is retail such a rewarding career? No two days are ever the same, and that’s exactly why I love it. Every day brings new challenges, opportunities and the chance to make a positive difference. Whether you’re helping a customer, supporting a colleague or launching something new, you can see the impact of your work almost immediately. Few industries offer that level of pace, variety and fulfilment. What qualities do you look for in future leaders? Leadership starts with values, not experience. I look for people who are kind, honest, respectful and genuinely care about others. I also value people who take responsibility, solve problems and lead by example. Technical skills can be developed, but qualities such as integrity, resilience, humility and compassion are what create exceptional leaders. What are some of the biggest misconceptions about working in retail? Many people think retail is simply stacking shelves or serving customers. Those roles are incredibly important, but they’re only part of a much wider industry. Retail offers careers in leadership, buying, logistics, marketing, finance, digital, pharmacy, funeral care, HR and much more. It’s an industry full of opportunities for anyone willing to work hard, embrace change and keep learning. How does the Channel Islands Coop support colleagues who want to develop their careers? Developing our people is one of our biggest priorities because our colleagues are what make our society special. We invest in learning, coaching, mentoring and leadership development, while encouraging colleagues to gain experience across different parts of the business. We actively promote internal progression because we want people to build careers with us, not simply have a job. Great leaders coach and develop others, helping them build confidence and realise their potential. When our people succeed, our society succeeds. What do you think the next generation of retail professionals will need to succeed? Curiosity, resilience and a genuine passion for people will always be at the heart of great retail. Technology and customer expectations will continue to evolve, so adaptability and a willingness to keep learning are essential. Despite all that change, one thing remains constant – people buy from people. Those who can build relationships, communicate well, show empathy and lead with authenticity will always stand out. Why should someone choose a career with the Channel Islands Coop? We’re different because we’re member-owned. That means our focus is on creating value for our members, colleagues, customers and local communities, rather than external shareholders. At the Coop you’ll be part of an organisation that genuinely invests in its people, encourages new ideas and provides opportunities to develop and grow. If you’re passionate about people, enjoy working as part of a team and want to make a positive difference in your community, it’s a fantastic place to build a rewarding career.
