‘No Safe Seats’ targets Arizona Democrats. Here’s what the campaign means PHOENIX (AZFamily) — A group of Arizona progressive Democrats is taking aim at members of their own party, launching a campaign called “No Safe Seats” ahead of the July 21 Democratic primary. State Sen. Analise Ortiz is one of the driving forces behind the effort, which she described during an interview on Politics Unplugged with political editor Dennis Welch. “We’re living through one of the most dangerous moments in American history,” Ortiz said. “The gap between the rich and the poor is growing. Trump is actively working to unravel voting rights to target immigrant families, and to strip us of other rights within the Bill of Rights.” Ortiz said the campaign is a response to Arizona Democrats she believes are enabling a Republican agenda, including votes she says have put the U.S. Constitution at risk. “No Safe Seats is an effort between myself and four other progressive, working-class, first-time candidates who are working to say, we’re not going to accept the status quo anymore. We’re not going to accept this corrupting influence of corporate money,” Ortiz said. The Candidates The No Safe Seats slate includes: - Alberto Flores - Running for Arizona House of Representatives District 24. - Analise Ortiz - Running for reelection to the Arizona State Senate in District 24. - Lisbeth Arescurenaga - Running for Arizona House of Representatives District 24. - Miranda Lopez- Running for Arizona House of Representatives District 21. - Rocque Perez- Running for Arizona House of Representatives District 20. The money When asked about fundraising, Ortiz said the effort has gained early traction. “In the first 24 hours, No Safe Seats raised over $2,000. We are now up to $6,000,” Ortiz said. Party unity concerns Welch pressed Ortiz on whether the campaign risks fracturing the Democratic Party, invoking the old political saying “blue no matter who.” Ortiz pushed back. “Voters are tired of Democrats who are not stepping up in this critical moment for democracy,” she said. “And we have seen that the policies progressives are pushing are popular policies, and voters are choosing those policy ideas over political labels. We’re talking about guaranteed childcare, keeping people in their homes, keeping immigrant families together. Taxing the rich. These are not radical ideas.” The July 21 Democratic primary will be the first test of whether voters agree.
