Доктор Джон Гайтанис, выступавший экспертом по травмам от вакцин, возглавил федеральный институт исследований детского здоровья

A Pediatric Neurologist Who Testified for Vaccine Injury Claimants Now Runs the Federal Child Health Research Institute The Appointment and the Portfolio It Controls The National Institutes of Health has installed a new director at the institute that funds most federal research on pregnancy, childbirth, child development, and intellectual and developmental disabilities. NIH Director Jay Bhattacharya announced the selection of Dr. John Gaitanis, a pediatric neurologist, to lead the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, according to the agency's announcement. Gaitanis began the role on August 23. The scope is substantial. The institute directs roughly $1.7 billion a year, employs about 1,100 people, and supports approximately 2,300 research grants and projects at institutions in the United States and abroad. Its portfolio covers maternal, gynecologic, and child health, as well as the health of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Bhattacharya said Gaitanis's "forward-thinking approaches for NICHD research will help us adapt" to the realities of rising chronic disease. Gaitanis previously served as chief of child neurology at Tufts Medical Center and director of child neurology at Brown Medical School, and until last year, worked at Brown's Hasbro Children's Hospital. He sits on the board of the Medical Academy of Pediatrics and Special Needs, which NIH describes as a national leader in translating emerging science into care for children with complex conditions, and the group received its Trailblazer Award last year. He has also served as an expert witness for claimants in vaccine injury proceedings, as Science reported in its coverage of the appointment. That is a documented element of his professional record. It is not a finding about the merits of any claim he testified in, and the federal vaccine injury compensation system is designed to hear expert testimony from both sides. Households Have a Direct Stake in This Institute Most federal science appointments do not touch ordinary family decisions. This one sits closer than most. The institute funds the research base underneath a great deal of routine pediatric and obstetric care: how medications behave in children's bodies, what happens during preterm birth, how developmental conditions are identified and supported, and what interventions actually work for maternal health. A director does not write clinical guidelines and cannot change what a pediatrician recommends at a well-child visit. What a director does control is which research questions receive money, which reviewers see which applications, and which scientific priorities the institute pursues over a multi-year horizon. Those choices reach families years later through the evidence base from which guidelines are eventually built. Nothing about immunization schedules, screening recommendations, or prenatal care changed this week. Vaccine policy is set through separate processes involving the CDC and FDA, not through NIH institute directorships. Parents who are wondering whether to alter anything based on this news have no clinical reason to. The distinction between funding research and setting policy is easy to blur and worth holding onto. An institute director decides which questions get studied. Advisory committees at other agencies decide what clinicians are told to do with the answers. Those are separate pipelines with separate personnel and public comment processes, and a change at one end does not automatically propagate to the other. The Institutional Context Around the Pick The appointment lands in the middle of an unusual period for the agency's leadership structure. Bhattacharya has begun filling the top slots at 15 of the NIH's 27 institutes and centers, most of which became vacant last year after directors were fired or pushed out. Science reported that the Gaitanis pick is stoking concern that appointees are being chosen for views outside the scientific mainstream and without experience administering NIH research funding, and noted that another newly installed official has already blocked grants that staff had recommended or that a previous interim leader had approved. A permanent director also carries authority that an acting one generally does not exercise. Interim leaders typically maintain existing commitments rather than redirect them, which can cause a portfolio to drift for months without anyone making a decision about it. The institute had been running under temporary leadership. Dorothy Fink served as acting director from August 9 during the transition, and Bhattacharya thanked her in the announcement. Science also reported that grant disruptions at the institute, including suspended awards at public universities that staff is supposed to leave alone because they are protected by ongoing litigation, could jeopardize its ability to spend its full 2026 budget before the fiscal year closes on September 30. "This is too late in the fiscal year to stop an approved paylist," said Elizabeth Ginexi, a former NIH program director who has criticized policy changes under the current administration. Money that lapses at fiscal year-end does not simply carry forward, which is why the timing of a leadership handoff in late August carries practical weight. Three Markers Worth Watching in the Coming Months Three concrete markers will show more than any characterization of the appointee's views. The first is the September 30 fiscal deadline and whether the institute obligates its appropriated funds. Grant paylists that stall late in a fiscal year are difficult to rescue, and the consequence falls on university laboratories and the trainees they employ. The second is which research areas receive new funding announcements under the new director. Institutes signal priorities through funding opportunity announcements long before anyone writes a press release about a shift in direction. That matters for work with direct public health stakes, from the cost of outbreak response to research on why vaccination rates diverge across groups. The third is whether the institute's advisory council, which reviews and recommends grants, sees changes in composition or in how its recommendations are handled. Gaitanis has not given public interviews about his plans for the institute as of publication, and NIH has not announced specific programmatic changes. Nor has the agency said whether the institute's existing research priorities, including its work on preterm birth, pediatric drug dosing, and developmental disability services, will carry forward unchanged. Readers looking for the substantive answer to what this means will find it in funding decisions over the coming year rather than in the announcement itself. Key Questions Answered Who was appointed? Dr. John Gaitanis, a pediatric neurologist, was named director of the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. He began on August 23. What does the institute do? It funds and conducts research on maternal, gynecologic, and child health, as well as on intellectual and developmental disabilities, directing about $1.7 billion a year across roughly 2,300 grants and projects. What is drawing scrutiny? Gaitanis has served as an expert witness for claimants in vaccine injury proceedings. Science reported concerns that recent NIH appointees hold views outside the scientific mainstream and lack experience with agency funding. Does this change vaccine recommendations? No. Immunization schedules and vaccine policy are set through CDC and FDA processes, not by an NIH institute director. Should parents change anything about their child's care? There is no clinical reason to. Nothing about screening, prenatal care, or immunization guidance changed with this appointment. Why does the fiscal calendar matter here? Science reported that grant disruptions could threaten the institute's ability to spend its full 2026 budget before the fiscal year ends on September 30, thereby affecting funded laboratories. What would actually signal a change in direction? New funding opportunity announcements, changes to how advisory council grant recommendations are handled, and the institute's spending record over the coming year. Published by Medicaldaily.com
