Next generation: Bruce Hamilton steps down as Kelowna Rockets GM, son Curtis takes over Published 11:00 am Wednesday, August 26, 2026 The Kelowna Rockets have named a new general manager ahead of the 2026-27 season, the second in franchise history. After 35 years as general manager of the Rockets (including their time in Tacoma), Bruce Hamilton is stepping down from the position to make way for his son, Curtis, who will immediately take over. “I am excited for the opportunity and challenge of the new role. I look forward to working with the staff, players and community,” said Curtis on the day of the announcement, Wednesday, Aug. 26. “This organization has always had high expectations, and that will only continue moving forward.” Curtis has experience in a variety of roles with the Rockets, including becoming the assistant coach for the 2020-21 season before transitioning into management under the wing of his father. While Curtis takes on the responsibility of drafting, scouting, trades, signings and other duties, Bruce will remain president and governor of the organization, telling Black Press Media now is the right time to bring in a younger perspective. “I’m very happy with how Curtis has matured and developed into a sound hockey mind, and I’m confident he will do a great job for the Rockets and our fanbase,” said Bruce. “… After 35 years, and with how today’s athletes and the game continue to evolve, the time is right for me to move into a different role.” WHL Commissioner Dan Near talks highly of Bruce, calling him one of the most accomplished hockey executives in Western Hockey League (WHL) history, extending congratulations to Bruce on a long tenure as GM. “We’re grateful Bruce will continue serving as president of the Rockets and WHL chairman of the board, and we look forward to welcoming Curtis in his new role as general manager,” said Near. He calls Bruce the architect of the Rockets, leading the team to four WHL championships and a Memorial Cup, all while capturing the title of WHL Executive of the Year in 1992-93 and 2002-03. Across the team’s 35-year history with Bruce at the helm, the Rockets played 2,722 games, recording 1,446 wins and 1,206 losses or ties. Training Camp for the 2026-27 season kicks off on Thursday, Aug. 27.
