Ушел из жизни основатель и фронтмен группы Cult Of Youth Сьюэн Рагон

Sean Ragon, founder and frontman for the goth- and punk-rooted psych-folk band Cult Of Youth, has died. "It is with a heavy heart that I say, Sean Ragon has left this mortal coil," reads an announcement from the band's Facebook page. "Thank you to all of you for the support over the years. Love will prevail." No cause of death has been listed. He was 45. Ragon was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts to prominent local philanthropists Philip "Terry" Ragon and Susan Ragon. He got his start in music in the late '90s, playing in local punk bands like Class Action and Wreckage, pursued abrasive electronic music under the alias Axiomata, and circa 2010 did a brief stint playing bass in the Olympia, Washington indie band Love As Laughter. But by then he had launched the band that would be his main musical legacy. Cult Of Youth began as Ragon's solo project in the late 2000s. Taking influence from pagan folk acts, a wide range of goth and punk bands, and industrial pioneers Throbbing Gristle, Ragon's early releases for labels like Dais Records honed in on a doom-laden, militaristic strain of neo-folk that built up a fervent underground audience. By 2011, they'd become a full-fledged band and signed to the burgeoning Brooklyn punk/indie/electronic label Sacred Bones, a perfect aesthetic match between artist and record company. That's when Stereogum named them a Band To Watch. Cult Of Youth followed up their 2011 self-titled debut LP with two more great albums for Sacred Bones. Awarding Album Of The Week honors to 2012's Love Will Prevail, my colleague Tom Breihan dubbed it "a chilly and unforgiving piece of work" but also "catchy and propulsive and compulsively listenable." By 2014's also excellent Final Days, Cult Of Youth's first album recorded with the full five-piece lineup, their sound had evolved so much that Ragon had taken to declaring, "We’re just a rock band at this point. Like psychedelic rock or something." In 2009, around the same time Ragon was getting Cult Of Youth off the ground, he opened the Brooklyn record store Heaven Street Records. The business changed names to Material World Records in 2016 and in 2025 became Nexus Records. During Cult Of Youth's early 2010s run, Ragon also ran the record label Blind Prophet Records, participating as a band member for several groups on the roster including Believer/Law and Kama Rupa. He was also involved with the Austin-based experimental collective Future Blondes. In the late 2010s, Cult Of Youth stayed quiet, but Ragon kept making noise. His Discogs page is littered with side projects, one-offs, and solo endeavors. After honeymooning in Berlin in 2014, he later moved there and launched the dark electronic solo project Venerence. In 2016, he released one tape as part of the electronic noise duo Nervenklinik. Also in 2016, he performed with hero Genesis P-Orridge as a touring member of Psychic TV. He contributed to a power electronics project called Comandos Omega in 2019. In late 2022 Ragon returned with a new Cult Of Youth album, With Open Arms, pieced together from 2015 sessions in the mountains of Vermont with help from Ragon's Psychic TV bandmate Jeff Berner. The album came out on New York's Hospital Productions, and barring some posthumous release, it stands as the final Cult Of Youth LP. Below, revisit some of Ragon's music.
