New Milford among the first Connecticut districts to start school year NEW MILFORD, Conn. (WFSB) - The New Milford School District was one of the first districts in Connecticut to bring students back to class. Buses arrived at Hill and Plain School on Monday morning. Students met their new teachers. The teachers prepared for their return last week. Kindergarten’s big day Christal Ledley and her daughter Teagan said they had been preparing for Teagan’s first day of kindergarten. Teagan received a welcome at Hill and Plain School with cheerleaders and the school mascot. “I can’t wait for her to come home and talk about her first day at her new school,” Ledley said. Ledley said the morning was emotional. “A little emotional yeah. We were kind of stressed this morning getting everything together, but I’m excited too. I hope she has a wonderful day. I’m just happy,” Ledley said. District focus for the year Close to 3,500 students across New Milford were anticipated to attend the first day of school. At Hill and Plain School, about 350 pre-K through second grade students were expected. The district’s focus this year is “Together We,” an initiative Principal Cathy Calabrese said means education takes a village of teachers, families, administrators and communities working together. “We have a school motto here. ‘I matter, you matter, school matters,’ and we really believe that. Teachers are working really hard to make sure they are building those relationships with students and families,” Calabrese said. The superintendent said it shows education takes a village of teachers, families, administrators, and communities working together. School garden Students at Hill and Plain School have a school garden called Barkley’s Backyard Garden that has been growing all summer. Classes will use the space daily to learn about the growing process. “We are able to serve that in our cafeteria as well so they’re able to see that it’s from the garden right to the cafeteria,” Calabrese said. Getting back to a routine Daniel Lozada’s son Castinano is starting second grade. Lozada said he is looking forward to his son spending time outdoors. “They got to get their mind going again because too much video games in the house and they need to socialize,” Lozada said. Meanwhile, each family of a kindergartener received a bedtime story recording from their assistant principal to help ease nerves ahead of the first day. The district said parents will be welcomed to the high school on Sept. 8 for a curriculum night to hear about what their children will be learning this year. Copyright 2026 WFSB. All rights reserved.
