New Hermiston dessert shop offers up decadent delights
Published 6:00 pm Thursday, September 3, 2026
HERMISTON — Hortencia by Alondra’s Sweets, a new dessert shop in Hermiston, promises to satisfy anyone with a sweet tooth.
The shop at 508 Main St. offers a wide variety of homemade treats. The Hermiston Chamber of Commerce hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony Thursday, Sept. 3, with owners Nabel Calvillo and her husband, Juan, to celebrate their new business.
“This is a wonderful place and if you haven’t already been here, shame on you,” Hermiston Chamber Executive Director Val Hoxie told the large crowd that gathered for the celebration. “Everything is very delicious. They have great Wi-Fi and people hold meetings here, but, of course, people mainly come in here for the wonderful treats.”
Business began at home
Hortencia by Alondra’s Sweets opened on May 5. Calvillo said she has always enjoyed baking and began selling her desserts from her home prior to moving into the former Roy & Venita’s location on Main Street. While working out her home, Calvillo would offer catering services.
Calvillo started baking with her mother while living in Mexico and hasn’t stopped since. She said when she got pregnant, she began making glazed chocolate cake to satisfy her cravings. She said the cake became popular with her customers, who started requesting specific treats.
That’s when she and Juan, who is a Walmart truck driver, made the decision to move the business out of their home and into the Main Street location.
“We wanted to pursue a wider range of customers,” she said.
Cheesecake, cookies & more
Calvillo said her guava cheesecake is a top seller.
“It’s our most popular treat,” she said. “It’s made with three different kinds of milk. It’s a very popular dessert in Mexican culture.”
Another popular cheesecake is her churro cheesecake, which she says is a combination of a New York cheesecake and Mexican churros.
Cavillo’s chocolate chip cookies are large enough that just one could fill you up. She and Juan took part in the Umatilla County Fair parade and passed out 1,000 chocolate chip cookies.
“We ran out halfway through the parade,” she said. “Next year we’re going to prepare 3,000 or 4,000 so we don’t run out.”
Calvillo said the breakfast crowd comes in to enjoy her breakfast burritos, as well.
“It’s crazy how popular they are,” she said.
The shop’s decor includes a wall lined with pages from various books that Calvillo got from Goodwill and Neighborhood Books & Gifts on Main Street. Calvillo, her brother and her husband created all of the decor in the shop. Juan, however, said the credit goes to his wife.
“Every decoration is from Nabel’s inspiration,” he said.
The book wall has become a popular photo spot for customers. Many have posted photos on social media of themselves next to the wall.
“If you take a photo with the book wall, people will know where you are at,” Calvillo said.
The business name — Hortencia by Alondra’s Sweets — combines Nabel’s actual first name and the name of her daughter, Alondra.
Popular place for meetings
The shop offers an inviting atmosphere and is a popular place for groups to meet up, including real estate agents and a running club.
Nabel and Juan will host a classic car show in their parking lot on Oct. 10 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
All of that, however, is secondary to the desserts, which are decadently delicious. Calvillo said her shop is becoming a favorite of her customers.
“One woman came in and said she used to come here in her 20s when it was a restaurant,” Calvillo said. “She said it was her favorite place to eat and now she said it’s her favorite place to eat again.”
The shop is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
