New Baylor Round Table Members Build On 85-Year History
A new group of students is carrying forward one of Baylor's longest-standing academic traditions as the Round Table begins its 85th year. Founded in 1942 by English teachers James Pennington and George “Judge” Bradford, the Round Table has brought generations of Baylor students together for student-led discussions of works spanning literature, history and science. Faculty advisor and English Department Chair Tim Laramore ’99 said the group’s history is recorded in ledgers and books of minutes from previous Round Table meetings, giving current members a tangible connection to those who came before them. “It is fascinating to see students look through them and realize that Baylor students have been part of Round Table for so long,” he said, noting that some students find the names of siblings, parents, aunts and uncles in the ledger and recognize that it is now their turn to carry it forward. "Blayden Schwartz '27 looked through the ledger and found his sister, Skylar '24, his father and current trustee Skip Schwartz '91, and his grandfather, Hal Schwartz '60." Faculty advisors over the years have included Mr. Pennington (1942-1966), Bill Cushman ’59 (1966-1998), O.J. Morgan (1998-2004), Heather Ott (2004-2025), and Laramore, who began leading the group in 2025. Mr. Cushman, who guided the group for three decades, described it as “just as stimulating for the adults as it is for the students,” recalling the 200-plus works of literature, history, and science that passed across the table during his tenure. “There is no objective beyond the exploration and enjoyment of the text,” said Mr. Laramore. “Reading literature is a powerful experience, but sharing it with peers in the Round Table environment creates an unforgettable moment. In a hyper-connected digital culture, sixteen students sitting with paper texts for two hours feels both sacred and countercultural.” Multiple local students are Purpose First Scholars at Austin Peay State University for the 2026-2027 academic year:
