New at-home device targets PTSD in veterans
ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB) - For many veterans, the battle does not end when they return home. Post-traumatic stress disorder remains a difficult condition to treat, and the requirement of frequent clinic visits often drives patients away from traditional therapy and medication.
A new, FDA-authorized technology is aiming to change that.
Modius Spero, developed by Neurovalens, is an FDA-authorized, non-invasive home-use neuromodulation device indicated for treating symptoms associated with PTSD in adults aged 22 and older, for use alongside a comprehensive treatment plan under the direction of a healthcare professional.
“PTSD is extremely difficult to treat in any population,” said Jason McKeown, CEO of Neurovalens. “Our current focus is looking at the veterans in the US. A lot of treatment potentially fails because patients actually don’t want to do that or they don’t feel they can engage with that.”
McKeown said the Modius Spero technology stimulates the skin behind the ears.
“Because there are nerves very close to the surface that when activated, actually send stimulation into that central area and allow us to then activate parts of the brain that are maybe not working so well,” McKeown said. “So the parts that control stress response or the parts that control sleep.”
Thirty minutes a day can help restore normal function to the areas of the brain that regulate sleep and anxiety, according to McKeown.
“What we are trying to do is almost restore normal function again,” McKeown said. “So we’re not trying to sedate over the top or kind of mask the problem. We’re actually trying to activate those areas using a small and safe electrical pulse.”
Clinical trials and real-world feedback from doctors and families show promise, McKeown said.
“We’ve had really fantastic feedback, not just from patients, but actually from patient families and even their healthcare providers, so their doctors or the clinical team,” McKeown said. “If you look at our clinical trials, about two-thirds of patients actually see a really significant improvement.”
