New 495 NEXT Path Connects Northern Virginia WASHINGTON (7News) — Northern Virginia residents have a new way to walk, run and bike through the region with the opening of the 495 NEXT Shared Use Path, a new trail created through a public-private partnership between the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and Transurban. Beau Memory, president of Transurban North America, joined Good Morning Washington to share more about the project and how it fits into the company’s broader transportation investments across Northern Virginia. Transurban builds and operates major transportation infrastructure in partnership with government agencies, including Virginia’s 95, 395 and 495 Express Lanes. Memory said the company is also focused on investments beyond the highway that provide residents with more choices for getting around the region. The new project includes four miles of shared use path alongside 2.5 miles of new express lanes. While the additional trail mileage is significant, Memory said one of the biggest benefits is how the path connects with existing community trail networks. Those connections can turn a shorter weekend bike ride or walk into a much longer trip while giving residents greater access to destinations throughout the area. The shared use path is part of Transurban’s broader focus on providing transportation choices both on and off Northern Virginia’s highways. Since 2019, the company has invested more than $130 million in the Northern Virginia Transportation Commission’s Commuter Choice Program, supporting projects including park-and-ride facilities, bus service and commuter rail improvements. Additional improvements associated with the 495 Express Lanes extension include new access and parking for Scotts Run Nature Preserve. Transurban has also worked with VDOT on new bus service connecting Fairfax and Montgomery counties, including service between Tysons and Bethesda. With the new shared use path now open, Northern Virginia residents have another option for recreation and transportation while gaining new connections to the region’s growing network of trails and transit options.
