NERSA puts 10% cap on Sasol gas hikes

The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) has approved a maximum gas price of R97.31 per gigajoule for the first quarter of the 2026/27 financial year.
The decision forms part of NERSA’s consideration of Sasol Gas’ application for maximum gas prices for the 2026/27 and 2027/28 financial years. The regulator has, however, deferred its final decision on proposed gas prices for the 2028/29 and 2029/30 financial years.
NERSA has also approved the continued use of a quarterly price adjustment mechanism until March 2028. The adjustments will be based on actual gas acquisition costs and volumes, with changes implemented after a three-month lag.
The regulator said the adjustments would be closely monitored and verified against economic and acquisition-cost data to balance affordability, sustainability and efficiency.
As an added safeguard, Sasol Gas will need written approval from NERSA before implementing any quarterly increase of over 10 percent.
NERSA spokesperson Charles Hlebela said the decision comes as the country's gas market faces changes in supply, particularly with declining gas volumes from Mozambique.
"The decision comes at an important time for the South African gas market, given the anticipated decline in gas volumes from Mozambique, commonly referred to as the ‘gas cliff’, and the transition towards methane-rich gas as an alternative gas source."
Hlebela said the changing supply environment is expected to affect gas acquisition costs, available volumes and, ultimately, what customers pay.
He said NERSA's decision was intended to provide regulatory certainty during the transition, while ensuring that costs recovered through regulated prices are properly supported and treated in line with the approved methodology.
