Nebraska volleyball coaching legend John Cook keynotes regional ESU 16 teacher training
NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (KNOP) - More than 300 regional educators gathered at Hershey Public Schools on Tuesday to collaborate and hear from legendary Nebraska volleyball coach John Cook, kickstarting a collaborative push for classroom success as the new school year begins.
The regional professional learning network event, dubbed “The Big Red Huddle,” was hosted by Educational Service Unit 16 (ESU 16). The initiative brought together Pre-K through 12th-grade teachers, administrators and staff representing 10 area school districts.
Organizers designed the event, centered around the theme “Serve. Set. Succeed,” to help area educators build a strong, positive culture within their local communities.
“Well, just like a classroom, we need to build relationships first,” said Allison Smith, teaching and learning director for ESU 16. “It’s the same thing with building relationships within your school district and the community and having others to lean on. It’s important.”
Smith said the opportunity to bring in Cook, who led the Nebraska Huskers to four national championships, started with a simple email after she watched a match on television. Cook replied within 20 minutes to accept the invitation, citing his deep respect for the teaching profession.
Cook himself began his professional career as a high school teacher in San Diego. During his keynote address, he shared how an English teacher and a basketball coach helped him pass his college entrance exams, ultimately setting his legendary coaching career in motion.
“I ended up passing it, got to go to college, and that’s when I knew what my ‘why’ was,” Cook said. “I wanted to make a difference in kids’ lives because if it wasn’t for that coach and that English teacher, who knows where I would have ended up.”
Local administrators said having a keynote speaker who shares their professional background as a former classroom teacher made his message resonate deeply.
“That’s awesome. It kind of hits home, kind of reach us on different levels and the same level,” said Wallace Superintendent Joel Ferguson, who has served in his role for six years. “We’re not so much different. We really all strive for perfection and trying to get there and trying to work and do our best and see the best in others.”
Ferguson added that local school leaders deeply appreciated Cook taking the time to share his leadership principles with educators in smaller, rural Nebraska communities.
“I really appreciate John Cook coming out,” Ferguson said. “What an awesome opportunity for him to teach us and really show and help us lead.”
Following the keynote address, educators broke into specialized subject and grade-level groups to share practical lesson plan strategies they can implement immediately in their respective classrooms.
ESU 16 officials said they hope the regional network becomes an annual tradition, ensuring local school districts remain closely connected, supported and valued throughout the school year.
“We just are super excited that we have the opportunity to have Coach Cook,” Smith said. “And we just really want to know that our surrounding educators and leaders feel valued and appreciated.”
