Национальный культурный фонд Барбадоса выразил соболезнования в связи со смертью директора Эллиота Парриса

The National Cultural Foundation issues a statement following the passing of Dr Elliot Parris: The National Cultural Foundation (NCF) is deeply saddened by the passing of Dr. Elliott Parris, who served as the Foundation’s second Director from 1988 to 1995. Dr. Parris leaves behind a legacy of service, as an educator, sociologist, theatre practitioner, cultural advocate and devoted champion of Barbados’ heritage. His life was one of scholarship and activism, enriched by a deep appreciation for the power of culture to shape, affirm and celebrate who we are as a people. Educated at St Giles Boys’ School, Harrison College, The University of the West Indies, Mona, and the University of California, Los Angeles, where he earned his MA and PhD in Sociology, Dr Parris carried his passion for learning into local classrooms, teaching at West St Joseph, now Grantley Adams Memorial School, and Harrison College. His love for the arts, particularly theatre, was equally broad. His experience included work with the British Council and Theatre Workshop in Barbados, the Drama Society at Mona, Jamaica, and theatre arts programmes in California. He also collaborated with Yale University and the Smithsonian Institution, bringing together his academic training and his enduring belief in the transformative power of culture. During his tenure at the NCF, Dr Parris oversaw the introduction of the ‘Bajan Culture Village’ at King George V Memorial Park. The Village brought aspects of Barbados’ intangible cultural heritage into the Festival’s spotlight, showcasing traditions and practices including sticklicking, warri, stiltwalking and the Landship — expressions of the creativity, resilience and community spirit that defined Barbadian village life of yesteryear. Today, these cultural elements are given prominence at the ‘Crop Over Ceremonial Delivery of the Last Canes’,  the marquee heritage-based event that opens the Festival. Dr. Parris was a passionate advocate for the cultural sector, consistently championing greater investment and sponsorship for NCF programmes and festivals. He understood that culture was an essential force in the social, creative and economic development of Barbados. Following his years at the NCF, he returned to academia, where his distinguished career continued to flourish. He became Professor and Chair of the Department of Behavioural Sciences and Human Services at Bowie State University. Throughout his career, he held faculty appointments at Yale University, American University, Howard University and the University of Maryland, College Park. His expertise also led to consultancy roles with the Organization of American States on Caribbean Tourism Development and with the Smithsonian Institution’s Folklife Programme. His life was dedicated to knowledge, creativity, heritage and service. His vision helped to create spaces where Barbadian traditions could be seen, celebrated and passed on to future generations. In doing so, he helped ensure that the cultural story of Barbados remained a living one. The Board of Management and staff of the National Cultural Foundation extend heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, former colleagues, students and all who mourn the passing of Dr Elliott Parris. We give thanks for his life, his service and his enduring contribution to Barbados’ cultural heritage. May his memory continue to inspire, and may he rest in peace.
