STUTTGART — A painting by A.P. “Pete” Finken with ties to a Stuttgart family and more than six decades of history will return to the Grand Prairie this month. The Museum of the Arkansas Grand Prairie and the Arts Center of the Grand Prairie will host a reception Thursday, Aug. 20, celebrating the donation of Finken’s “The Quapaw Trail.” The reception will begin at 5:30 p.m. at the museum, with the painting to be revealed at 6 p.m. Fara Foster, executive director of the Museum of the Arkansas Grand Prairie, said the museum receives inquiries about potential artifact donations each week and considers historical relevance, exhibition potential and how well an item fits the museum’s mission. “When we received a call earlier in the summer asking if we may be interested in accepting a canvas painted by Pete Finken, we were thrilled,” Foster said. William and Dolores Abel Ottenad commissioned “The Quapaw Trail” in 1963 for William Ottenad’s office in St. Louis. Dolores Ottenad was born and raised on the Grand Prairie and graduated from Stuttgart High School in 1948. The painting remained in William Ottenad’s CPA practice until his retirement and was later displayed in the couple’s home. William and Dolores Ottenad died last October, four days apart. At the recommendation of Dolores Ottenad’s brother, Ed Abel, the couple’s children offered the painting to the museum. Abel will be the special guest at the Aug. 20 reception. He will share memories of his sister and their family before revealing the painting at 6 p.m. Finken, a German immigrant, came to the United States in 1907 and initially settled in Little Rock, where he worked for the Missouri-Pacific Railroad. He and his wife, Clara Keller Finken, moved to Stuttgart in 1922. Trained as an engineer and machinist, Finken worked for Layne Arkansas for 25 years while continuing his lifelong interest in painting. His works included landscapes and portraits as well as a 48-painting series titled “Clue to the Life Eternal.” Many of those works remain on display in Stuttgart churches. He also painted backdrops for the Duck Calling Contest and St. John’s sunrise Easter service. Finken’s influence on the arts in Arkansas County extended beyond his own work. He helped found the Brush and Palette Guild of Arkansas County, the Arkansas County Arts Festival and the Grand Prairie Arts Council and taught others to paint. His dream of opening the Arts Center of the Grand Prairie was realized in 1982, 14 years after his death. Finken is also one of seven people featured in the museum’s America250 exhibit, “Rooted on the Grand Prairie.” “The Quapaw Trail” will remain on display at the Museum of the Arkansas Grand Prairie for several weeks following the reception. It will then move to the Arts Center of the Grand Prairie for a temporary exhibition honoring Finken and his contributions to the organization. The Aug. 20 reception is open to the public and will be held from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Museum of the Arkansas Grand Prairie, 921 E. Fourth St. in Stuttgart.
