Matt Dalton, longtime Belle Haven chief executive officer and a respected voice in the municipal bond market, died Aug. 21. He was 62. Dalton was remembered by muni market participants for his leadership, kindness, humor and investment expertise. Under Dalton's 25-year tenure as owner and CEO, the boutique asset management firm built an outsized presence in the municipal market. Dalton and the firm's analysts were frequently quoted in the financial press, particularly about bespoke high-yield municipal bond deals and distressed municipalities. "The municipal community is a small, tight community and so many people knew him," said Nicole Robbins, Belle Haven's director of marketing and partner. "The outpouring of messages we've been getting is very heart-warming and brings tears to my eyes." Joseph Matthew "Matt" Dalton passed away at his home in Katonah, New York, according to a Dalton was born in Ohio and grew up on a farm in central Indiana. The death notice said he came "from humble beginnings: milking cows before dawn, running a junk tire business and owning a gas station all by the age of 19." Dalton began his finance career in 1985 in Chicago, where he joined Shearson Lehman Brothers in an unpaid position before rising to senior vice president of the municipal trading and sales department. In 1994, he was recruited to Rodman & Renshaw to lead its municipal bond department before joining Belle Haven in 1996. The firm is based in Rye Brook, New York. Dalton joined Belle Haven when the firm was still a broker dealer. He was key in shaping the firm's growth into a boutique asset management firm with 45 employees, up from just 10 employees 15 years ago. "Drawing on his experience in institutional bond sales, it was his decision to move in the direction of asset management," Robbins said. Dalton took the helm of the firm in 2001 and it began managing accounts in 2002, she said. "He crafted our investment philosophy and it hasn't changed since he put it all in place; there are a lot of people who have been here their whole careers," Robbins said. "A lot of firms don't make it past $1 billion [assets under management] and here we are at $25 billion AUM and still operating under his original vision." In June, Dalton transitioned into the firm's chairman and president to focus on his health, Robbins said. Laura Chapman took over as CEO and Matt Thomas and Max Christiana as co-CIOs. "Matt was a huge part of my life for more than a decade," Thomas said. "He taught me how to think, how to compete, and how to carry myself. His curiosity, toughness and generosity shaped me in ways I'll carry with me forever. I'm incredibly grateful to have learned from him and, more importantly, to have called him a mentor and a friend." Dalton "believed deeply in relationships, trust, stewardship, and a genuine responsibility to our clients. He fostered a culture grounded in those principles," Belle Haven said in a Former colleagues and friends and partners across the muni business commented about Dalton's impact on LinkedIn. "Matt taught me more about this business, and about people, than I ever expected when I first started at Belle Haven," said former Belle Haven employee Brian Steeves in a comment. "He was so good at cutting through the noise of municipalities defaults, low rates, no rates, insurance, inflation, rising rates or any other boogieman that was out there to stir investors," said Elias Bachmann, CEO of REYL Overseas, in a comment. "Beyond his focus on the fundamentals of bond investing, he was also fun to meet in person." "Matt was a great guy, he will be much missed," said Vikram Rai, portfolio manager at First New York. The Municipal Bond Club of New York remembered Dalton for his "leadership, vision and contributions to the municipal bond community." Outside of work, Dalton raced cars — he won the amateur 488 Challenge Evo Coppa Shell championship in 2024 as a driver for Ferrari of Long Island, according to the death notice. Dalton is survived by his wife of 32 years, Chris, and their three children, Wyett, Bridget, and Garrett.
