Muncie to dedicate Benjamin V. Cohen historical marker A new Indiana historical marker honoring Muncie native Benjamin V. Cohen, a presidential adviser, diplomat and legal scholar who helped shape major pieces of U.S. legislation, will be dedicated at noon Sept. 23 in downtown Muncie. According to a community announcement, the ceremony will be in the 500 block of South High Street in Muncie and coincides with the anniversary of Cohen's birth. Born in Muncie, Cohen became a prominent legal scholar and public servant whose work extended from federal policymaking to international diplomacy. He also helped draft the Civil Rights Act of 1957, according to the announcement. The marker recognizes Cohen's contributions to public service, diplomacy and American law, including his work as a legal architect of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal and the Lend-Lease program. "The Indiana Jewish Historical Society is proud to help bring greater recognition to Benjamin V. Cohen and his remarkable legacy," said Michael J. Brown, executive director of the Indiana Jewish Historical Society. "His story is an important part of Indiana's Jewish history and of the broader history of public service during the 20th century in our state and nation." Members of the public are invited to attend the dedication ceremony. For additional information and RSVP details, organizers asked interested attendees to contact the Indiana Jewish Historical Society.
