Mum spots toddler alone in swimming pool and fumes about where his parents are
A mum was stunned by a group of parents' "outrageously irresponsible" behaviour around the swimming pool while on holiday, after spotting their toddler "bobbing around" in the water with no adult supervision
Senior News Reporter
A mum was gobsmacked after spotting a toddler "bobbing around" in a swimming pool unsupervised by any adults - and when she realised where his parents were, she blasted their "outrageously irresponsible" behaviour but the parents simply "laughed".
The mum had been enjoying her holiday at a Eurocamp park in France and was keen to make the most of the getaway, spending some quality time with her six-year-old son. The mother-and-son ventured to the outdoor swimming pool but quickly spotted a little boy "maybe around 18 months" old but "certainly no older than a young two, bobbing around by himself in a float vest".
As the outdoor pool is not a "toddler-type splash pool" and her own son "was out of his depth" in it "apart from the steps to get in", the apparent lack of supervision around the toddler was deeply alarming to the mum.
She "watched him for a minute as he didn't seem to have anyone with him" before she and another woman approached him to try and ask "where his mummy or daddy was" but the toddler "obviously" didn't answer given he was "very young".
The woman "led him to the steps" and his "older sister came rushing up to him", though the mum noted she was "considerably smaller" than her six-year-old, so couldn't have been "more than five" years old.
It soon became apparent the young children's parents were "watching the kids from the bar nearby with their friends", yet "they weren't in swimwear" and therefore in no position to quickly intervene should a tragedy unfold.
The bar wasn't within the pool area - it was on "the other side of a gate and foot bath", so while they could "see the kids", they remained "a fair distance away".
The mum took to Mumsnet to express her disbelief in a post titled "[Am I Being Unreasonable] to think this is outrageously irresponsible parenting".
Of the parents' response to her getting their baby boy out of the pool, she said: "They absolutely fell about with laughter when their son was helped out of the pool."
The mum continued: "I genuinely can't believe how irresponsible this parenting was... I am assuming I will get a unanimous YANBU but obviously there are parents out there who think this is not only okay but funny.
"Now kicking myself for not saying anything to them about it but didn't want to cause a scene, they were quite a big intimidating group standing there laughing their heads off."
When the post was shared to Mumsnet's official Facebook page, people were quick to voice their opinions - with many revealing they'd encountered similar situations while on holiday.
One person said: "Completely irresponsible. Any non-swimmer should have somebody with them at all times, and young children like that should have someone in the water with them."
Another said: "See it all the time on holiday." While a third commented: "We've just got back off holiday - there was a 2-year-old unattended in the pool who kept tripping and ending up face down in the water.
"Parent didn't care, they were too busy sunbathing, so I watched her with my own little girl. Drowning in little children happens quietly (no splashing or screaming) so the parent would likely have no idea until it was too late and there was no way I could have that on my conscience!".
Someone else said: "Many children are not being parented well, this is causing huge problems in society... We have entitled parents expecting everything to be about their child and neglectful parents who just don't care what their child is up to. Not so many in between any more."
And another added: "I'm no longer surprised at the sheer stupidity of some parents. Their blind faith that their children, who can't swim or at least can't swim very well, will somehow magically be okay, is beyond me."
