‘Mr. Tifton’ stars in Tifton Scene
Published 11:14 am Monday, July 6, 2026
It’s hard to imagine anyone who could better represent Tifton on the national stage than Tyron Spearman. His dedication to the city has earned him the nickname “Mr. Tifton.” He’s spread our city’s praises far and wide and invited people from all over the world to visit The Friendly City.
Learn how Spearman came to take such an active role in the life of our community. Davis Cobb has the story starting on Page 8.
Spearman isn’t the only big name in this issue of Tifton Scene, though. Cobb has also profiled Derrick Dove, the lead singer of Derrick Dove and the Peacekeepers. Based in Tifton, the band is receiving national and international acclaim with their “Southern-fried” blues.
Learn more on Page 14.
Tifton’s music scene is constantly strengthening with bands like Derrick Dove and the Peacekeepers, but its acting scene is growing as well. Craig Wells founded the Acting Company of Tifton about a year ago, and the troupe is getting its feet under it. It held two shows so far and more are planned.
Tift County is fortunate to have Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College, for a lot of reasons. One of them is WPLH, the campus’s radio station, which offers ABAC students a chance to spread their creative wings for everyone within earshot — which is now roughly the whole county, thanks to an upgrade in 2021.
Learn more about ABAC on the airwaves, starting on Page 22.
Dean Poling, retired editor of The Tifton Gazette, has pitched in a book review column for this issue, and travel writers Kay and David Scott of Valdosta share their experiences at a resort near Orlando, Florida. That’s only about 3 1/2 hours from here if the Scotts pique your interest.
Tifton Scene is always looking for local stories to share. If you know one, drop me an email at [email protected].
