В средней школе Селмы работают мать и сын: учитель математики Исайя Пэрри стал лауреатом награды Class Act

Mother-son duo works together at middle school, son named Class Act winner MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) - There’s a Ms. Perry and a Mr. Perry at Tipton-Durant Middle School in Selma. Ms. Cheryl Perry manages the front office, and Mr. Isiah Perry teaches math. “From going to ‘Mom’ to now going to work as ‘Ms. Perry,’ it’s definitely an interesting dynamic,” Isiah Perry said. This is home for Isiah Perry. He grew up in Dallas County. “Born and raised here, a product of the Dallas County School System. I actually went to school here, came back, and started teaching,” Perry said. He graduated from Southside High School and Alabama State University. While he played in the band and loves music, he said he always knew he wanted to come back and teach a core subject. “When I came here through my middle school years, there weren’t a lot of people who looked like me,” Perry said. “Oftentimes, especially in this area, most people don’t see their first male teacher—especially a Black male teacher—until they get to this point. You can come back home and still pull up the next generation behind you.” As a 6thgrade math teacher, he enjoys finding new ways to engage his students. They get up and move, and he even tries to incorporate anime into his lessons. “Now that I teach it, I teach it in ways that are a little more fun, interactive, engaging, and hands-on,” Perry said. He was surprised and excited to be named our monthly Class Act award winner. He said the ASU swag in his gift bag will go to good use. He’ll be in the stands at the first game, cheering on his alma mater, and then right back in the classroom on Monday supporting his students. “Extremely grateful and thankful for it,” Perry said.
