‘Moonlight’ returns to theaters in 4K for 10th anniversary

Barry Jenkins’ Oscar-winning “Moonlight” is returning to theaters this fall in a new 4K remastered version for the film’s 10th anniversary. The Moonlight re-release was announced at a special Telluride Film Festival screening, giving audiences another chance to revisit the landmark Black coming-of-age film from a director who has continued reflecting on his Hollywood journey. A24 will release the film in theaters on Oct. 2, according to Deadline. The anniversary presentation will also feature an exclusive conversation with Jenkins, Oscar-winning actor Mahershala Ali and Oscar-nominated composer Nicholas Britell. Tickets for the re-release are scheduled to go on sale Sept. 9, with a limited-edition anniversary art print also available. Released in 2016, “Moonlight” follows Chiron, a young Black man growing up in Miami as he navigates his identity, sexuality, family life and the expectations placed on him at different stages of his life. Jenkins adapted the film from Tarell Alvin McCraney’s unpublished play “In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue.” The film became one of the defining Black films of its era. It went on to win three Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor for Ali and Best Adapted Screenplay for Jenkins and McCraney. Its Best Picture victory also became one of the most memorable moments in Oscars history. Presenters Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway initially announced “La La Land” as the winner after receiving the wrong envelope. The mistake was corrected while the “La La Land” team was already onstage, revealing that “Moonlight” had actually won. “Moonlight” received massive praise when it first arrived in theaters, highlighting the film’s intimate portrayal of a gay Black boy coming of age in Miami. Jenkins has continued discussing the film’s place in his career, including the financial struggles he faced before his success became visible to Hollywood. The “Moonlight” re-release arrives nearly a decade after the film transformed Jenkins’ career and became a landmark representation of Black masculinity, sexuality and vulnerability on screen.
