Совет города Мууди принял прокламацию о неделе «Красной ленты» и снизил скоростной режим на шоссе

MOODY, Ala. — The 2026-2027 school year Moody Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors were introduced to the Moody City Council on Monday night where Red Ribbon Week initiative to prevent drug abuse was recognized with a proclamation. The meeting began with a recognition of the ambassadors. They were introduced by the chamber’s executive director, Andrea Machen. She explained that they are chosen by the board of directors at the Moody Chamber of Commerce after an interview process. “Each of these students you see tonight exemplify a spirit of excellence, leadership, and the love for our Moody community,” she told the council. The ambassadors will tour to learn about local and state government, as well as the medical field, manufacturing, corporate and retail business. Machen added that they will also learn from first responders and team building. They will serve at community events, including Oktoberfest, business luncheons and school and city events. “These students participate in other activities and a lot of them have jobs and so they are top of their class and we are very proud of them,” she said. Following this the council then declared a proclamation for the Cahaba Valley Young Marines to recognize the week of October 23-31 as Red Ribbon Week. “Alcohol and drug abuse in this nation have reached epidemic stages and it is imperative that visible, ununified prevention education efforts by community members be launched to eliminate the demand for drugs,” Mayor Nick Rutledge read from the proclamation. The initiative encourages the public to wear red ribbons during the week to promote drug use prevention. Member Arthur Harding spoke to the council and gave a background on the organization, saying that it began in 1959 in Waterbury, CT and is for boys and girls of ages eight to 18 or completion of high school. “What we do as a program is instill leadership, discipline and teamwork into the kids,” he said. “We do this by various means.” He also gave a background on Red Ribbon Week, which began in the 1980s after former marine Enrique S. Camarena was killed by a drug cartel as he was working with the Drug Enforcement Administration. Present with him was recently promoted Pvt. Kinney-Fomby, who is currently the only Moody resident with the Young Marines. Afterwards the council approved a proclamation to begin an effort to reduce the speed limit on US Highway 411 to 10 mph. Rutledge said that he met with Police Chief Reece Smith to discuss what to do about the road after a series of wrecks occurred there. “There’s no easy fixes out there,” he told the audience. “We all know that. But one thing we do notice is that even on our five-lane part of the highway the speed limit’s 40 to 45. But when you get past the main intersection of the crossroads the speed limit jumps from 50 to 55 and it’s 55 through a high residential and school area.” He said that he contacted the Alabama Department of Transportation, which he stated was supportive of a measure to lower the speed limit. “10 miles an hour doesn’t sound like a lot but as Chief Smith said, 10 miles an hour may be the difference between a broken collarbone and a traumatic brain injury,” Rutledge said. Moody City Council meetings are held on the second and fourth Monday of every month at 6 p.m. at Moody City Hall on 670 Park Ave. Nathan Prewett can be reached at [email protected].
