Библиотека Иллинойсского университета сэкономила авторам более 1 млн долларов на открытом доступе

In 2022, Milner Library introduced its Open Access Publishing Support program, which provides Illinois State University authors with the opportunity to publish their work open access at no charge to them in select journals through library-negotiated agreements with publishers. Since then, Illinois State authors have published over 295 articles open access with Milner Library’s support. For many journals, authors are required to pay a fee to publish their work open access to offset the publisher’s loss of subscription revenue, and these fees can range from $2,000-$4,000 per article. Through this program, Milner Library negotiates Read and Publish agreements with publishers that bundle journal subscriptions and publishing fees, removing direct costs for authors. As Illinois State kicks off the 2026-27 academic year, Milner Library is thrilled to announce this program has saved authors over $1 million while providing the opportunity to share their work more widely. Open access publishing removes barriers for readers and increases the visibility of scholars’ work by making it freely available online. Research has shown that open access articles receive more diverse citations, foster interdisciplinarity, and are cited more frequently than paywalled articles. Milner Library currently has 12 Read and Publish agreements with ACM, ACS, Cambridge University Press, Company of Biologists, Elsevier, IOP, Microbiology Society, Royal Society of Chemistry, Sage Publications, Springer Nature, Taylor & Francis, and Wiley. The range of journals available preserves author choice, and over 630 Illinois State authors, including students, have published under the agreements. “What I personally love about Milner Library’s Read and Publish agreements is that they allow me to publish in the journals recognized by my peers as critical and prestigious outlets in our field but also help me get my science on supporting families out to the public and around the globe faster and for free,” said Dr. Luke Russell, associate professor of human development and family science. “It means scholars and students at all sorts of institutions that are unable to afford expensive journal subscriptions can read my work, as well as practicing therapists, family-service professionals, lawyers, judges, or parents looking for evidence-based answers from the cutting edge of the scientific process.” While Milner Library’s agreements do not cover the publishers’ entire portfolios, Illinois State University authors can search for eligible journals using the library’s new Open Journal Finder tool.
