Article content Recommended Videos Article content Currie, who was a retired Chatham-Kent police officer and long-time cancer survivor, died in the fall of 2022. He was involved in numerous initiatives during the years supporting the Law Enforcement Torch Run. There was also a family connection this time around. “Mike’s three daughters reached out to me and said, ‘We want to be part of this right from the beginning,'” said Chatham-Kent police Sgt. Jason Herder, who helps organize the run. “It brings us kind of back to the original roots of a Currie putting on an event.” Signs featuring various photos of Currie were placed along the trail, and chalk messages of encouragement were written on the path. “It’s a more personal feel for Mike,” Herder said. “You can’t go wrong with containing everything for the run here at Mud Creek path. It’s tried, trusted and true. So many other organizations use it, so we jumped on board.” Article content More than $3,000 was raised through this year’s event, helping athletes locally and across the province. The torch run itself will mark 40 years in 2027. “Mike was one of those people that were in the original organizing committee,” Herder said. “So, it brings us full circle … It’s a very special moment for all of us.” In 2024, Special Olympics Ontario held its school championships at venues in Chatham and Ridgetown.
