Being an adult is expensive, confusing and, according to Avenue Q, best processed through song and puppetry. The Tony Award-winning musical comedy is coming to Metro Theatre this fall, opening the theatre’s 64th season with a healthy dose of existential dread, questionable choices, and the comforting reminder that nobody really knows what they’re doing. The show follows Princeton, a fresh college grad who arrives in New York City armed with a degree, optimism, and the apparently adorable belief that those two things will be enough to build a life. Instead, he lands on Avenue Q, where his neighbours are dealing with all the usual markers of adulthood: bad jobs, money problems, messy relationships, identity crises and wondering whether they’ve completely misunderstood the concept of having a “purpose.” Princeton’s new neighbours include aspiring teacher Kate Monster, roommates Rod and Nicky, therapist Christmas Eve, and Trekkie Monster, whose interests famously suggest the internet may not have developed entirely for educational purposes. There are also the Bad Idea Bears, arguably two of musical theatre’s most accurate depictions of that little voice telling you to make a decision you will absolutely regret tomorrow. Premiering on Broadway in 2003, Avenue Q took the colourful puppets and educational-TV format many audiences grew up with and asked what happens when those kids become adults. The answer includes sex, unemployment, racism, and more than a little disappointment. The musical went on to win three Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Book and Best Original Score. More than 20 years after its Broadway debut, the story stays relevant: it turns out adulthood is still mostly a matter of making plans and watching them immediately fall apart. At least on Avenue Q, there’s a puppet around to sing about it. Avenue Q When: September 18 to October 10 Where: Metro Theatre Tickets: $38+, available here
