The hospital, which was founded in September 1945 by the Sisters of Mercy, has evolved from a humble infirmary into a modern multi-specialty healthcare institution offering advanced diagnostic, surgical and therapeutic services, SJMH said in a press release. For 81 years, Mercy Hospital said it has remained committed to providing competent healthcare to all persons, regardless of race, colour or creed. Communications Coordinator Terry Mohamed, reflecting on the milestone, said she has considered it a blessing and privilege to have served the institution for more than three decades. “It has been a blessing and privilege to serve Mercy Hospital for over three decades. We, at Mercy, not only care for the patient needs but we ensure that we accompany them even after they are discharged,” Mohamed said. Chief Operating Officer Jerri Dias said the anniversary represents a tribute to the dedication of the hospital’s doctors, nurses, support staff and the Sisters of Mercy, whose vision continues to guide the institution. “This anniversary is a tribute to the unwavering dedication of our medical staff, nurses, support teams, and the Sisters of Mercy, whose vision continues to guide us,” Dias said. Over its 81-year history, Mercy Hospital has continued to provide a range of healthcare services, including emergency care, obstetrics and gynaecology, surgery, paediatrics, internal medicine and rehabilitation. The institution has also maintained a strong community outreach programme, particularly in assisting underserved populations and supporting public health initiatives across Guyana. According to the hospital, its modernisation efforts include upgrades to diagnostic equipment, laboratory capabilities and patient-care facilities, aimed at meeting the increasing healthcare needs of Guyana’s growing population. The 81st anniversary comes as Mercy Hospital continues its longstanding mission of combining modern medical care with the values of compassion and service that have been at the heart of the institution since its establishment in 1945.
