Medical condition likely preceded Ballard crash, officials say TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - A medical condition was believed to have preceded an Aug. 4 crash in which Washburn University basketball coach Brett Ballard was seriously injured on Interstate 470 along the Kansas Turnpike just east of Topeka, officials said. The crash was reported at 9:17 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 4, on westbound I-470, just west of the Interstate 70 and Interstate 470 split. The Kansas Highway Patrol said a white 2024 Ford pickup truck driven by Ballard left the south side of westbound I-470 and struck a delineator post before striking the embankment and hitting a bridge pillar. Ballard, who was alone in the truck, was transported to Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka with serious injuries. In the days following the crash, Washburn officials said Ballard continued to recover at the hospital. Additional information about his condition hasn’t been released as of Wednesday, Sept. 3. In the Kansas Highway Patrol’s Motor Vehicle Crash Report, a witness reported seeing Ballard’s truck “drifting to the left” before it went into a grassy area on the inside shoulder of I-470. The witness said he wasn’t sure if he saw any brake lights before the truck “impacted” the bridge pillar that supports S.E. Tecumseh Road. Additionally, the witness stated it appeared the driver “fell asleep or had some medical condition” as the truck drifted off the road. The witness also said he didn’t observe any “erratic driving or speeding from the truck prior to the accident.” The witness said he stopped and called 911 and helped render aid on the scene until first-responders arrived. The report indicated Ballard, who was unconscious at the scene, had to be extricated from the vehicle. In follow-up interviews, Kansas Highway Patrol officials reported that Ballard had no recollection of the crash. Family members also told Kansas Highway Patrol troopers that doctors stated that Ballard had a medical incident that led to the crash. According to family members, “The doctors believed the medical incident occurred prior to the accident,” and that it led to the crash, the Kansas Highway Patrol report stated. The witness’s “observations that the driver didn’t appear in control of the vehicle as it went off the roadway corroborated the fact that the doctors thought a medical incident had occurred prior to the accident,” the Kansas Highway Patrol report concluded.
