GREENWICH – A Florida LLC has purchased the Long Island Sound waterfront property at 553 Indian Field Road for $19.9 million, according to town property records. Blue Haven V LLC of Hobe Sound, Florida, acquired the 5,385-square-foot, 2.36-acre estate from Gunders Family LLC in Greenwich on June 11. The sale represented the first time the Mead Point Association property was listed in 40 years. The listing agent was Joseph Barbieri of William Pitt Sotheby’s. The owners of the Mediterranean-style home pay $76,045 a year in property taxes and $6,947 a year in HOA fees. Originally custom-built in 1982, the stucco-finished estate features 4 bedrooms and 5.5 bathrooms as well as a spacious main living room with high ceilings, a first-floor primary suite, and a library. The property was originally owned by the Gunders family. It was quit claimed to the Gunders Family LLC by Henry Gunders and Amy Wilfert, trustees of the Elaine L. Gunders Revocable Trust in 1996. Henry Gunders, who died at 101 in 2025, and his wife, Elaine Schantz Gunders, were the original owners of the property. Henry was a well-known man in the Greenwich community as he oversaw the rebuilding of Temple Sholom in Greenwich. According to his obituary, his subsequent apprenticeship as a tool-and-die maker gave him a useful skill as well as a lifelong respect for working people. He is likely among a handful of men who fled Nazi oppression only to return to fight Hitler when the U.S. declared war in 1941. He enlisted in the newly created Ski Troops, training for mountain warfare at Camp Hale, Colorado, claiming that if it was anybody’s war, it was his. After the war, he returned to work and graduated from Boston University. He began his career at legacy Price Waterhouse in 1951. He eventually served as senior partner in charge of consulting. Later, Price Waterhouse tapped him for the national firm where he served his partners as a member of the Policy Board for 13 years and co-chair of the U.S. firm. He was a member of Boards of Trustees and Boards of Overseers of several graduate schools, including: Duke University – Fuqua School, Columbia University – Uris School and University of Connecticut – Storrs.
