Жителя Мельбурна обвинили в убийстве 79-летнего немца в Кройдоне

Joseph Yu charged over alleged murder of German national Peter Duss, 79, in Croydon An alleged killer has appeared in court sporting an injured hand after he was accused of murdering his elderly neighbour this week. Joseph Yu, 57, briefly appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday afternoon for an administrative hearing after police formally laid a charge of murder. Mr Yu was arrested on Penhyrn Ave in Croydon early on Monday morning and taken to hospital after police located the body of German national Peter Duss, 79, about 2.10am at the home. Wearing a blue and black polo shirt and light-coloured shorts, Mr Yu sat with his arms crossed — sporting bandages on one wrist. The court was told police were seeking a longer-than-usual period of 14 weeks to prepare their case against Mr Yu, noting it will take time to receive an autopsy report, results of forensic and biological testing and a “blood pattern analysis report”. Prosecutors also said police would need to examine multiple mobile phones, CCTV and 35 hours of body-worn camera footage. The presiding magistrate agreed, saying it was a “sensible approach”, and remanded Mr Yu in custody to return to court on January 20 next year. Mr Yu’s lawyer asked the court to note he spoke limited English and needed to have a hand injury assessed by a custody nurse. “Thank you to my lawyer and court,” he said, per a Mandarin translator. According to Victoria Police, officers were called to Penhyrn Ave after receiving reports of a dispute between the Mr Yu and Mr Duss, who were known to each other. Neighbours told media Mr Duss had lived at the address for decades, with his death a shocking loss for his community. The elderly expat also volunteered as a German language tutor for the University of the Third Age – an international education movement designed for retirees.
