WAMPSVILLE, NY – A total of 2,500 youth participated in a teen assessment survey, providing valuable insight into the experiences, behaviors, and well-being of young people throughout Madison County.
“The aggregate survey results provide youth voice around issues impacting students,” Madison County Youth Bureau Director Tina Louis said in a news release from the county. “A close look at the data is especially important for a deeper understanding of areas of what continues to be positive responses as well as how to improve services, opportunities and supports provided to youth.”
As part of an ongoing process to understand the lives of young people from their perspective, the voluntary and confidential TAP Survey examines a broad range of risk and protective factors.
The findings help schools and local organizations identify strengths and emerging needs, inform programs and services, guide funding and resource decisions and strengthen collaboration across the community.
Combined results are available for students attending Canastota, Cazenovia, Chittenango, DeRuyter, Hamilton, Madison, Morrisville-Eaton, Oneida, and Stockbridge Valley school districts, as well as programs under Madison-Oneida BOCES.
“The TAP Survey gives us something that other data sources cannot: direct insight into how young people experience life in Madison County. By listening to young people and using what we learn to guide our work, we can build more responsive communities, promote positive youth development, and create brighter futures for Madison County youth,” said Erica Bird, the Deputy Director of Madison County Public Health Director.
Overall, the survey presents a largely positive picture of adolescent well-being in Madison County. Most students report strong family relationships, supportive school environments, and a sense of safety at home, in school, and in their communities.
Substance use and other high-risk behaviors remain relatively low, while the findings also highlight opportunities for continued investment in mental health, healthy habits, and support for young people experiencing academic or other stress.
“In the critical mission of serving Madison County children and families with the greatest level of care and excellence, the Madison County Youth Bureau and the TAP survey, offer individual school districts both personalized resources and a unifying partner in this zero-fail endeavor,” Chittenango Central Schools Superintendent Michael Eiffe said.
The data brief, complete interactive report, and trend data are available through the Madison County Youth Bureau webpage: https://www.madisoncounty.ny.gov/150/Youth-Bureau. The use of skip logic can lead to errors in data interpretation.
Questions about the data or requests for a guided review or presentation of the aggregate and subgroup findings may be directed to: [email protected].
“Together, Madison County schools and our exceptional Madison County services team lead the way in data driven, proactive, and informed advocacy,” Eiffe said.
