Lubbock’s Oldest Radio Station Turns 99: What Life was Like in 1927
Lubbock's longest-running radio station, KFYO, celebrates 99 years on the air on September 6, and it had us thinking: What was life like for the average Lubbockite 99 years ago?
A Day in the Life: Lubbock, 1927
During our research, we came across a Facebook post from the group If You Grew Up in Lubbock, Texas, You Remember When... which showed newspaper clippings, photos, and advertisements from the Hub City in 1927. Here's the full post from Dave Walker before we break it down into detail.
The Avalanche-Journal, as it was called back then, was filled with local stories and ads for great deals on jewelry, clothing, and services we may find interesting. For instance, you could visit the Anderson Bros. Jewelers for diamonds and watches as gifts for your graduating senior.
Speaking of graduation, what says 'perfect gift' for the Texas Technological College (now known as Texas Tech) class of 1927 more than greeting cards and sweets from Norris Candy? You can't go wrong when the newspaper ad assures you that they will be "enthusiastically appreciated by the graduate."
Perhaps clothing was more your style. Florsheim shoes from Barrier Bros. just $10. Hosiery for just $1.59. Not interested? Oh, I see. You're one of them "big spenders." Well, then allow me to introduce a great deal on a brand new Greater Oakland Six sedan for a pricey $1,095.
While you ponder a new vehicle, why not visit a one-of-a-kind Vaudeville performance every Monday and Tuesday evening from M. Drayton? Just make sure you save enough cash to afford the $1 down on that brand new Gibson refrigerator.
Of course, with that new refrigerator, you would need ice deliveries from Texas Utilities Co. to your home every day during the hot West Texas summer.
Oh, I've saved the most frustrating part for last. We all know gas prices are through the roof in the year 2026, but 99 years ago, if you visited Super Service Station on Broadway, you could fill your tank for just thirteen cents.
We Were There!
Out of everything mentioned, KFYO has been on the air through it all! Here's to another 99 years and counting!
Check out more about Lubbock life in 1927 from Dave Walker's Facebook post, and enjoy the trip down memory lane from nearly a century ago.
