Инвестиция Valero в 500 тысяч долларов создала новый реакторный лабораторный комплекс для студентов Lamar University

Lamar University students have a new way to experience the realities of the energy industry before they ever step onto a refinery floor, thanks to a $500,000 investment from Valero that has transformed laboratory space in the College of Engineering. University and Valero Port Arthur Refinery officials gathered Wednesday for a ribbon cutting celebrating the new Valero Reaction Lab, a facility designed to give engineering students hands-on experience with technology and processes used in industry. The investment, presented to Lamar University in 2024, funded upgrades to the Process Control Lab and Unit Operations Lab and created new opportunities for students to train in a real-world learning environment. “This is not just about new equipment; it’s about creating real-world learning opportunities for students and strengthening the future of the workforce of Southeast Texas,” Lamar University President Jaime Taylor said. The new Valero Reaction Lab features reactors and separation units that allow students to conduct hands-on experiments while studying chemical engineering concepts ranging from foundational principles to more complex processes. The space also includes an 18-foot video wall, modular desks, high-end graphic analysis capabilities and a fully online learning environment. Students will also work with a Process Control Lab Simulator and Carbon Capture Unit, gaining experience with process control, optimization and carbon capture technologies. The training environment allows students to practice responding to routine and unexpected situations, including alarm management and abnormal operating conditions. “Our overarching goal is to reduce the time that young engineers need to transition from an academic mindset to an industrial one,” Tracy Benson, associate dean of research and innovation for the Lamar University College of Engineering said. For Valero, the investment builds on a longstanding relationship with Lamar and the company’s role in developing the Southeast Texas workforce. Jerry Stumbo, vice president and general manager of Valero’s Port Arthur Refinery, said the idea for the Valero Reaction Lab began in late 2024 and became reality through the company’s investment and collaboration with the university. “This lab represents much more than equipment and technology, it represents an opportunity,” Stumbo said. “These are career-changing, life-changing professions that they’re able to get here at Lamar University.” Stumbo said the laboratory gives students an early look at the challenges and innovations that define the energy industry while providing those nearing graduation with experience that can prepare them for internships, careers and leadership opportunities. The connection between Valero and Lamar University extends directly into the regional workforce. “Valero’s Port Arthur Refinery employs our students as co-ops/interns and full-time professionals, so they have a vested interest in ensuring that our laboratories and curriculum are at the cutting edge of today’s technology,” Benson said. Taylor said Valero Corporation and the Valero Foundation have contributed more than $1.5 million to Lamar University over the years, a longstanding investment that reflects the company’s commitment to education, workforce development and the future of Southeast Texas. “That level of support reflects a genuine belief in education, workforce development, and the future of Southeast Texas,” Taylor said. The partnership also provides a direct connection between what students learn in the classroom and the skills they will need in the workforce. “By combining Lamar University’s talented students with Valero’s expertise, support, and real-world perspective, we create opportunities that benefit our students, strengthen our industries, and contribute to the success of our entire region,” Taylor said.
