Louisiana Homeowners Warned About Termites
Louisiana brings warmer nights, thicker humidity, and, unfortunately, termites. The LSU AgCenter is warning homeowners to pay close attention, especially as Formosan subterranean termites swarm across the state.
For Shreveport, Bossier City, and the rest of northwest Louisiana, this is not just a south Louisiana problem. Louisiana’s climate makes homes more vulnerable, and LSU AgCenter entomologist Aaron Ashbrook says the risk comes from a familiar combination: rain, moisture, wood, and a high water table.
“It has to do with the amount of rainfall that we get in the state, our higher water table, as well as being lower, relative to the sea level; more moisture, we have lot of wood,” Ashbrook told Louisiana Radio Network.
Why Louisiana Homes Are So Attractive To Termites
Termites do not need much encouragement in Louisiana. Warm weather and moisture give them the kind of environment they want, and many homes provide nearby food sources without owners realizing it.

Firewood stacked near the house, cardboard left in a garage, old lumber under a porch, or damp wood close to the foundation can all make the trip easier for termites. Ashbrook says the closer wood is stored to the home, the shorter the distance termites have to travel before they start threatening the structure.
That matters because termites do not need to announce themselves loudly. By the time a homeowner notices damage, the problem may already be expensive.
Lights Can Make The Problem Worse
One simple step homeowners can take during swarm season is turning off unnecessary outdoor lights at night. LSU AgCenter experts say Formosan subterranean termite swarmers are attracted to light, especially in the evening.
Ashbrook said, “The lights will lure in the insects in the evening. The Formosan subterranean termite females, they are attracted to light and are nocturnal.
That does not mean every flying insect near a porch light is a disaster. It does mean homeowners should avoid inviting swarmers closer than necessary.
Ashbrook says the first line of defense is working with a licensed pest control company before termites become a visible problem.
“That goes towards working with your pest control company to get your home protected, usually through the application of liquid termiticide or the in-ground bait stations,” he said.
For homeowners, the takeaway is simple. Turn off extra lights during swarming season, keep wood away from the house, reduce moisture near the foundation, and do not wait until damage appears before calling a professional.
