A Lorain woman has honored her late father with a heartfelt song, turning sadness into a melody to be felt.
About two years ago, Samantha Jessel’s father, Jerry Kilby of North Ridgeville, was in a motorcycle crash that put him in a coma.
While family gathered around him, the Lorain woman wrote lyrics to a song, which is titled “Country Boy’s Heart Don’t Ever Leave” and can be streamed on all platforms.
During the time her father was in a coma, she added music to those words and played it for her father at his bedside. Three months later, when he died, Jessel wanted to record the song as a tribute, but wasn’t sure how to go about it.
In May, Jessel discovered Rock Town Music Academy in downtown Lorain and began voice lessons with Jaclyn Bradley, the director of the music school, to achieve a polished sound on the song.
Jessel then met with music producer Jordan Alegant, also of Rock Town, to begin recording the track.
“My dad’s motto in life was to wear his heart and soul on his sleeve and that is something I aim to always do in his honor,” said Jessel. “Writing this song is my way of expressing my gratitude and unwavering love for my father.”
The song details Jessel’s dad’s Tennessee roots and his inspiration of the country music played by country music star Hank Williams Jr.
“One of the beautiful things we do at Rock Town is help students turn feelings into song and create recordings they are proud of.” said Bradley. “To support someone’s dream is a magical process to be a part of.”
Teachers at Rock Town are all working artists who pay forward their love of music.
Private lessons for children and adults are facilitated for piano, voice, guitar, drums and violin, as well as group band classes.
Bradley and Alegant are just two of 12 instructors at Rock Town who bring a wealth of experience, education and knowledge to the Lorain music scene.
Bradley is a graduate of Indiana University School of Music, and Alegant is an alum of Berklee College of Music in Boston.
”I was thrilled to help Samantha bring her song to life” Alegant shared. “I’m so proud of how this one came out.”
Turning grief into grace, Jessel’s collaboration with Rock Town has been a journey that she feels has been led by the heavens, said Bradley.
