Longview public library awarded grant for storybook walk at Broughton Park LONGVIEW, Texas (KLTV) - The Longview Public Library was awarded a grant that will fund a storybook walk at Broughton Park. The library was awarded $9,909 to install permanent pedestals along a storybook walk path near Broughton Recreation Center. The library applied for the Texas Reads grant through the Texas State Library and Archives Commission, also known as TSLAC. Grant details Jill Clay, youth services supervisor at the Longview Public Library, said the Texas Reads grant is competitive, offering up to $10,000. Longview Public Library was one of 14 libraries across the state of Texas to receive a grant this year. The storybook walk will feature children’s books along the path at Broughton Park. Clay said the project is intended to give families a way to engage in literacy and physical activity together and to connect the community with the Broughton Branch library located inside Broughton Recreation Center. Access and timeline The storybook walk will be free to the public and available year-round. Clay said there is no set installation date yet. The library will work with the Longview Parks and Recreation Department on installation. The library also partnered with the Greater Longview United Way in sponsorship of the project. “Hopefully soon,” Clay said. “We’ll work with our Longview Parks and Recreation department to get that going.” Literacy and community engagement Clay said the storybook walk promotes reading and helps connect children with parents, caregivers and the community. “It’s a way to create learning opportunities, literacy opportunities outside of a traditional classroom,” Clay said. “And it connects them with their parents or caregivers and anyone in the community that wants to take place in this.” Clay said the library is thankful to the Texas State Library and Archives Commission for the grant, as well as to the Greater Longview United Way and the Longview Parks and Recreation Department for their partnership on the project.
