Amber Kilby remembers the exact moment she fell in love with her job all over again. It happened to be one of the scariest moments in a local family’s cancer journey.
“I saw that there was a family in our community in need, and being here long enough I have lots of connections within the community, so I was able to make a few phone calls and get the family the help they needed,” says Kilby, now in her 13th year working healthcare in Summit County. “It was an after-hours situation, and that’s always rough, right? If you don’t have the right people to get in touch with.”
That moment got noticed. One of Kilby’s coworkers at St. Anthony’s Summit Hospital nominated her for the CommonSpirit Human Kindness Award, which is given to healthcare workers across the region for going above and beyond the call of duty.
And Kilby won. (Pictured far left below)
“It was very unexpected,” she says. “I felt very honored, very special. I was lucky to have wonderful, welcoming people who could help me navigate that, and they deserve claps for helping this family as well.”
This is Kilby’s first solo award, but it is not the first time she has been recognized. In 2016 – just three years after she came to the Summit hospital – she and others won the hospital’s Guardian of Excellence award. In 2020, at the height of the COVID pandemic, she shared another honor with four fellow nurses, when they were named Nurse of the Year for National Nurses Week.
“I feel so lucky that I get to show up for our community every day,” she says. “The hospital staff is just a little family. I really get to know patients and their family members, and I get to follow them through their toughest times with support that gets them to the other side.”
Kilby brings that same love for community to a new local fundraiser. The Hearts and Soles Walk, held Sept. 12 in Frisco, raises money for the infusion center where she works.
“It’s to honor the cancer survivors and their caregivers and celebrate the journeys they have been on outside of the clinic,” she says. “It’s to honor their journeys.”
Kilby would love to see you at the Hearts and Soles Walk with distances from one mile to 5 kilometers. Registration starts at 8 a.m. at the hospital. First waves leave at 10 a.m. with an afterparty and food at 1 p.m.
