В Северном Бенде открывается премьера спектакля «Удивительная история собаки, убитой в ночное время»

A mystery unfolds onstage this month in North Bend as Little Theatre on the Bay brings “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time” to the Liberty Theatre, pairing a whodunit premise with a story told through the eyes of a likely autistic teen. Based on the novel of the same name, the award-winning play follows 15-year-old Christopher Boone after he is found in a neighbor’s backyard in the middle of the night, standing over the body of Wellington, a dog “who’s been speared with a garden fork.” Christopher decides to investigate who killed the dog, and in the process uncovers neighborhood and family secrets that upend his world. “I think some people will be surprised that this is not a story about disability,” director Ansel Tauber said, “but a story about difference and overcoming obstacles. I think people will be surprised at how much they identify with Christopher and his family.” Tauber said the play’s significance is personal. “The story is extremely important to me as a neurodivergent person and as someone who works with neuordiverse people. I saw the original West End production, and it stuck with me. Now that The Liberty Theatre is fully restored, they have the technology to make this show happen,” he said. The Liberty Theatre, home of Little Theatre on the Bay, is a historic North Bend landmark where a 10-year, $4 million restoration was recently completed. The project preserved the 101-year-old building while updating systems including sound and lighting. The production will also showcase the theatre’s new projection system. “There are many intricate, different technical and acting elements have to come together to make the show work,” Tauber said. “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time,” a PG-13 rated show, runs Sept. 18, 19, 25 and 26 at 7 p.m., and Sept. 27 at 2 p.m. A free, autistic-friendly performance is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 20 at 2 p.m. Sponsored by Pathways to Positive Parenting, the special showing is designed to help people with autism experience live theatre in a less sensory-overwhelming environment. “I hope that audiences will walk away from the theatre with the same takeaway that I did so many years ago,” Tauber said. “That with the proper support systems, we can do anything.” Performances will be held at the Liberty Theatre, 2100 Sherman Ave., North Bend.
