Listen to this musical tribute to Stroma: Songwriter Roddy Rogers celebrates the art of 'Uncle Frankie' The rich history and haunting beauty of the island of Stroma have inspired a moving new song by Scottish musician Roddy Rogers, paying tribute to the island's legendary storytelling tradition and a well-known local character. Entitled Stroma - The Storyteller, the song is a deeply personal release for the singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist, whose own family roots are firmly anchored in the now-abandoned island sitting just off the Caithness coast. The track specifically celebrates the late Frankie Robertson, a cousin of Roddy’s father, whose captivating tales left an indelible mark on the musician during his youth. "I was inspired to write the song by memories of meeting Frankie a long time ago," Roddy explained. "He was a cousin of my dad, Alf Rogers, who had lived for a brief time on Stroma in his teens. I mostly remember the fabulous stories and the brilliance and joy with which Uncle Frankie told them. "I was also lucky enough to visit the island with my dad, and we were very kindly shown around by the then-owner, James Simpson." Though the song is deeply rooted in the maritime landscape of the Pentland Firth, it recently received its live premiere hundreds of miles away in the south of England. The track was performed live for the first time just a few weeks ago by Chanter, the Celtic folk-rock band that Roddy has fronted for many years. The performance took place in the historic surroundings of the Ashdown Forest in Sussex. As Roddy notes, it is a long way from Stroma to the forests of southern England, but he is certain "Frankie Robertson could have come up with a compelling tale about the journey". Roddy, who plays electric and acoustic guitar, violin, and mandola, brings a wealth of musical experience to this latest project. Drawing on his family's Scottish heritage and an upbringing in Ireland, he has built an impressive career as a solo artist and session musician. Over the years, he has shared the stage and studio with top-tier rock and folk legends, including legendary Jethro Tull and Fairport Convention bassist Dave Pegg, and renowned drumers Hughie Flint and Mickey Waller. His songwriting has previously won high praise, with the Irish Post describing his recent release No Time To Wait as "a terrific album from a gifted songwriter”. Following on from his tribute to Stroma, Roddy is preparing for a busy summer. He has teamed up once again with Grammy award-winning bassist Dave Pegg for a brand-new single, The Sea, which is scheduled for release this August.
