Terminally ill King’s Lynn Town fan fulfils final wish to watch beloved Linnets A lifelong King’s Lynn Town supporter battling a terminal illness was able to fulfil a huge wish after the club helped him attend Monday’s National League North clash against Scarborough Athletic. James Mason, 43, from Lynn, watched his beloved Linnets in action at The Walks surrounded by family and friends, despite facing significant health challenges following a devastating diagnosis earlier this summer. Mr Mason, who has followed King’s Lynn Town home and away since his teenage years, was diagnosed with acute and late-stage liver and kidney disease and spent a short period receiving treatment at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital before being discharged home. He is now being cared for by his parents, Val and Mick Mason, sister Hannah, and partner Kirsty, who is a nurse on the Peddars Way Unit, the hospital’s dedicated end-of-life and palliative care facility. The diagnosis has had a profound impact on the family, including Mr Mason’s sons, Caleb, 18, and Josh, 12. Supported by loved ones and specialist hospice charity Tapping House, Mr Mason recently compiled a bucket list of things he hoped to achieve. Among his wishes was attending one more King’s Lynn Town match. Although deteriorating health and mobility problems appeared likely to prevent the visit, club officials stepped in to help make it happen. The family were welcomed to The Docherty Walks Stadium on Bank Holiday Monday for the Linnets’ match against high-flying Scarborough Athletic, where Mr Mason was able to enjoy the occasion alongside relatives and friends, many of whom had travelled long distances to be with him. The day included several special surprises. On arrival, Mr Mason was presented with a signed Linnets shirt and match ball by players Aaron Jones and Tom Dickens, leaving the lifelong supporter overwhelmed. Adding to the significance of the occasion, Tapping House - which has been supporting the family throughout Mr Mason’s illness - was the match-ball sponsor for the game. The Mason family have expressed their gratitude to everyone involved in making the day possible. In particular, they praised Lynn's head of commercial, David Griggs, for his efforts in organising the visit and supporting the family throughout the day. They also thanked Nigel and Bailey from Clenchwarton Cabs, who transported Mr Mason and eight family members to and from the ground at short notice. “Without their help, James genuinely would not have been able to get to the match,” the family said. The family also paid tribute to the many friends, relatives and well-wishers who helped make the occasion so memorable. They said: “To everyone who played a part in making the day special for James, thank you. You have all been part of something truly memorable.” For a supporter who has spent decades following the Linnets through thick and thin, Monday’s game was the fulfilment of a cherished wish and a reminder of the strength of community spirit in the face of adversity.
