Грозовой разряд убил 220 овец на исторической ранчо в Монтане

In August, the Dillon-based Helle Rambouillet Ranch lost 220 sheep to lightning. The sheep were killed in the ranch's summer range in the remote Gravelly Mountains in Madison County. John Helle told NBC Montana it appears the sheep huddled close together under trees for protection against a hailstorm when lightning struck them. The rancher said "violent lightning storms" are not uncommon in this high mountain country. "It's an extreme environment," he said. "You never know when it's going to strike." "Thank God, we didn't lose any of our men," he said of family members, or the sheepherders who guard the flocks. Helle said he's "grateful" for the many volunteers who came to help remove the sheep and bring them to carcass disposal facilities. He said it was "critical they jump on it right away" to prevent predators, especially grizzly bears, from the dead animals." He said both ewes and lambs were killed. "I feel bad for the mothers that lost lambs, and the lambs that lost mothers," he said. The Helle ranch is a historic multi-generational family operation dating back to the 1930's. John Helle co-founded the Montana-based Duckworth Merino Wool Apparel Company.
