Handspun yarn
The Humboldt Handweavers and Spinners Guild will hold its monthly meeting Sept. 10 at 6:45 p.m. at the Wharfinger Building, No. 1 Marina Way, Eureka.
The guest speaker will be Kira Dulaney, who has traveled the country teaching fiber arts for over 20 years. As a designer of knit and crochet patterns, she is skilled at adapting yarns to projects. She will talk about handspun yarns and how to decide which type of project would work best: weaving, knitting or crochet. She will also discuss the basics of altering patterns and gauges. Those attending may bring problem skeins to discuss.
Humboldt Handweavers and Spinners Guild programs are free and open to all. For more information, go to hhsguild.org.
Whale talk
The Redwood Region Audubon Society will present a free talk exploring five decades of whale research. The program, “What’s Song Got to Do With It? Megaptera Meets Troglodytes,” will be presented by Jeff Jacobsen on Sept. 17 at the Six Rivers Masonic Lodge, 251 Bayside Road, Arcata.
Drinks and goodies are served at 7 p.m., and the program begins at 7:30 p.m. One can also find it on Zoom — go to rras.org for the link.
Jacobsen first came to Humboldt State University (now Cal Poly Humboldt) in 1973 to study oceanography. A chance invitation in 1977 — a road trip to northern Vancouver Island to camp, launch a Zodiac and look for killer whales — changed the course of his life. He went on to earn a master’s degree in 1990, studying the social bonds within whale family groups and discovering along the way how the study of oceans naturally leads to the study of animal behavior.
In this talk, Jacobsen will share what 50 years of photographic identification research has taught him about whales’ individual personalities —recognized by their natural markings in the brief moments they surface for air. He’ll also discuss the science of humpback whale song, an ongoing global study into the cultural lives of these long-living animals, and his work from 2006 to 2020 with Bio-Waves Inc., where he helped build and tow hydrophone arrays across the North Pacific and Gulf of Mexico to track cetaceans acoustically.
Winter gardens
The Humboldt-Del Norte Master Gardeners Monthly Lecture Series is set for Sept. 19 from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the Eureka Library, 1313 Third St., Eureka.
The program, “No More Naked Winter Gardens,” will be presented by University of California Master Food Preservers and Master Gardeners Jennifer Bell and June Walsh.
Bell and Walsh will show everyone how to grow, harvest and preserve garlic and fava beans, and those attending will have the chance to taste various recipes highlighting both ingredients.
Bell has been a Master Food Preserver since 2012 and a Master Gardener since 2022. She is the project director for Food for Thought, producing films and podcasts about local food for over 15 years. Walsh has been a Master Gardener since 2010 and a Master Food Preserver since 2014. She is also co-curator of the Moss Family Temperate Woodland Garden at the Humboldt Botanical Garden.
