Minister responsible for Immigration E.P. Chet Greene announced the appointment, saying the vacancy was filled internally after Lewis and Shelby James applied for the post. The position was not advertised outside the department. Both candidates went through a formal interview process before an independent panel comprising Shirlene Nibbs, Colin James and Director General of Foreign Affairs Ann-Marie Layne. “They were both interviewed by an expert panel who I want to name today and thank,” Greene said, adding that the panel had “unanimously agreed” to recommend Lewis for the role. Greene said he reviewed the panel’s recommendation and gave his consent, formalising Lewis’s appointment. He did not specify how long the post had been vacant or when the interview process began. Responding to the announcement, Lewis said she accepted the role with confidence and gratitude, describing the appointment as the start of a new chapter in her career. “We must continue to have faith, remain focused, and trust that what God has prepared for us cannot be taken away by those who stand against us,” she said, referencing Psalm 23 in her remarks. Lewis said she intended to approach the post with a clear sense of purpose. “I move forward with faith, humility, courage, and determination,” she said, thanking those who supported her throughout the appointment process. She also acknowledged the responsibility attached to the role and said she looked forward to working alongside her colleagues in the department. “I am honoured to serve in this capacity as I look forward to what we will all accomplish together,” Lewis added.
