Lee Shenton honored with lifetime achievement award for Utah paleontology

Lee Shenton, president of the Utah Friends of Paleontology 's Moab-based Gastonia Chapter, has received the organization's Lagerstätte Award for Lifetime Achievement in Volunteer Support of Paleontology, the chapter announced in a release this week. The award was presented in his absence at the group's annual convention in Salt Lake City, held Aug. 28-30. On Sept. 6, friends recreated the presentation at a breakfast in Moab, where Shenton learned of the honor. Shenton and his wife, Susan, moved to Moab in 2002. In 2009 he became project liaison at the Moab UMTRA Project, the uranium mill tailings cleanup site. In 2013 he helped Rebecca Hunt-Foster, now park paleontologist at Dinosaur National Monument, found the local chapter, named for Gastonia, a dinosaur first discovered a few miles north of Moab. He, Susan and others spent some 200 volunteer hours freeing the Moab Museum 's Apatosaurus "Wiren" femur from the rock around it. He logged long stretches at the chapter's fossil-preparation bench at Moab Giants, talking with thousands of children and their families as bones emerged from the matrix. A fundraising campaign he ran, matched through a partnership with Grand County, raised tens of thousands of dollars for the dinosaur exhibits at the Utahraptor State Park visitor center. He also started the chapter's monthly speaker series, which has brought scientists from far and wide to Moab. "His ability to inspire scholars to travel to Moab and make public presentations is unparalleled," the chapter said. Shenton earlier served as a UFOP state president. The chapter also maintains public fossil sites such as the Mill Canyon Dinosaur Tracksite. The area around Moab has come to be recognized in recent decades as a center of Late Jurassic and Early Cretaceous discovery, with dozens of new species identified in nearby excavations.
