Реновация трассы LaVern Gibson близится к завершению перед национальным чемпионатом

LaVern Gibson Cross Country Course renovations near finish line ahead of national championship TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - Major upgrades are nearing completion at the LaVern Gibson Cross Country Course as officials prepare to host championship-level races later this year. Renovations at the world-renowned facility remain right on schedule despite a wet summer, according to tourism and county officials. Karen Dyer, representing the Terre Haute Convention & Visitors Bureau, said the project is enters its final phase. “We’re getting close to the finish line for completing everything,” Dyer said. The updates are designed to maintain LaVern Gibson’s status as a premier national cross-country destination, matching the amenities of other modern, championship-level courses. Improvements include fresh landscaping, new statues, and dedicated social spaces for competitors and spectators alike. “A nice outdoor fire pit area, so for those evenings, nights, and cold weekends where we can have the students and the runners and their families, kind of gather around this very large outdoor firepit,” Dyer said. The updates will also feature a unique local art installation: a giant shoe statue accompanied by several other artistic pieces. “It will be a kind of tie-in between the course and the downtown community with six, 6-foot by 6-foot fiberglass shoes that will be painted by local artists,” Dyer explained. Constant rainfall throughout the summer months posed minor challenges for the construction crews, particularly for tasks requiring heavy machinery on outdoor soil. “It’s been a rainy summer, so we’re a little bit behind finishing a few things, just because we weren’t able to get into any of the outdoor stuff, because of the wet summer we’ve had,” Dyer noted. “But we’re not too far behind. We’re close to being on schedule.” The course has already hosted several local high school cross-country meets this season, with runners and coaches offering positive feedback on the changes. Renovations are expected to wrap up by early autumn, well ahead of the course’s major postseason event. “Changes will be completed by the first part of September, and then November will be the National Championships,” Dyer said. WTHI will continue to provide updates as construction wraps up at the course. Copyright 2026 WTHI. All rights reserved.
