Langley green tech firm creating clean heat for breweries Published 9:00 am Monday, July 6, 2026 A Langley firm is hoping to bring its technology to a new market – helping local B.C. brewers make their beer. Green Matters Technologies is the recipient of $880,000 from the Innovative Clean Energy Fund, a provincial program aiming to help businesses in the clean technology sector build their businesses. The Langley firm isn’t a brand new startup. It’s been around since 2011, but moving into the beer making market is a new project. Green Matters was established in 2011 in Richmond, moving to Langley in 2021, building high-efficiency heat pumps. Their systems are scaled for large buildings like hotels, sports facilities, and high rises. According to the company, they were established based on the idea that there is an enormous amount of energy being wasted in commercial buildings. Buildings like large hotels in hot climates run air conditioning and refrigeration systems around the clock, while also providing hot water for guests, kitchens, and pools. “That simultaneous demand for cooling and hot water makes hotels a compelling early application for heat recovery technology,” a statement from the company said. The new project is dubbed the CE-B50, the world’s first heat pump designed to replace both the boiler and chiller in a brewery – another business that needs heating and cooling. “Brewing is an energy-intensive process,” the company said. “You need to heat water to around 85° Celsius to mash and heat, then rapidly cool the wort down for fermentation — all in the same production cycle.” Most of the heat in modern breweries comes from gas boilers, while separate electrical chillers deal with the cold side of the cycle. The CE-B50, currently in the prototype stage, is designed to capture the waste heat from the cooling process and re-direct it to the heating side, making the whole process more energy efficient. It can eliminate or reduce natural gas use, cut electricity demand, and simplify equipment, the company says. With a thousands of craft breweries across Canada, and tens of thousands in the U.S., Europe, and beyond, the company believes it’s a large market. The system was designed with microbreweries in mind first, built to be modular and scalable. The company also hopes it could be scaled up to larger breweries, as well as into food processing facilities, manufacturing plants, hospitals, and any industry where heating and cooling have to run in parallel. Green Matters is currently validating its prototype with Langley’s Five Roads Brewing, to test and show how the technology works. The provincial funding is going directly towards developing that prototype and refining it into a commercial product. The company views the $880,000 from Victoria as a vote of confidence. “For us this kind of investment means more than the dollar figure, it is independent validation from the province that the technology is credible, the market opportunity is real, and the work matters for British Columbia’s energy future,” the company said in a statement. “It accelerates a timeline that would otherwise take considerably longer, and it allows us to move with confidence toward the commercialization stage – with a real prototype, a real brewery partner here in Langley, and a real opportunity to show what this technology can do.”
