In a post on the museum’s Facebook page, museum officials stated “on behalf of Museum Staff and the OPHAT Board, it is with profound sadness that we mourn the sudden loss of our board Vice President, Beverley McChesney-Rumble.
“Without Bev’s stalwart support of the Museum, we simply wouldn’t be here.
She was instrumental in securing the Museum’s future and funding to continue in 2024. Her love and passion for the Museum and the Sir Harry Oakes Chateau is long standing. Her grandfather was the head carpenter for the Lake Shore Mine and worked alongside Harry Oakes for years. It meant more to her than most that this and our legacy continue.
“Bev was a devoted teacher (retired, but never really retired) and community champion. Her career had her celebrating arts and culture, particularly with drama and a dedicated educator of students with special needs.
“She was creative, bold and enthusiastic and utilized those strong characteristics to support the Museum, Trinity United Church, the Lasalle Theatre, and Kabaret (to name a few)
We will forever be grateful for her care, dedication and steadfast support of the Museum and other community causes. May her spirit of celebration, creativity and enthusiasm for Kirkland Lake and its people continue on. Rest easy Bev.”
In 2025 she was presented with the Ontario Senior of the Year award. This provincial award, overseen by the Ministry of Citizenship and Culturalism, gives each municipality in Ontario the opportunity to honour an outstanding resident, aged 65+, from their local community each year who has been found to enrich the social, cultural or civic life of their communities.
The award was presented to her by Kirkland Lake Mayor Stacy Wight.
During Tuesday’s town council committee of the whole meeting, the mayor and council took time to honour McChesney-Rumble in their own way.
After the meeting Mayor Wight stated “Go on social media and read some of the comments from different generations that Bev has touched. She was a safe space for so many kids.
“I saw it when she was a teacher, I saw it as a board member of Kabaret. Kids that needed someone, Bev was always there for them, and I think that is one of the greatest impacts. She is an icon in our community. She helped so many charities. She volunteered her time. She was one of the driving forces that saved the museum. She was such a strong voice in our community.”
The Celebration of Life will take place at Kirkland Lake’s Trinity United Church beginning at 10 am, with a reception to follow at the Museum of Northern History.
