В Кингс-Колледже пройдет премьерный показ студенческого кабаре «Кто я?»

King’s College Theatre Department’s second annual student showcase cabaret, “Who am I?: Reflections of a Journey,” will feature six original one-person performances exploring personal experiences, emotions and questions of identity. The production will open King’s 2026-27 Mainstage season and will be directed by assistant professor Jahmeel Powers. Performances will be held Sept. 9-11 at 12:20 p.m. in the George P. Maffei II Theatre, with evening performances added at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 10 and 11. The production is part of King’s revived Brown Bag Theatre series, which was originally launched by Brother James “Bro” Miller, a former department chairperson and longtime advocate for theater at the college. The series was reinstated during the 2022-23 season in recognition of Miller’s contributions to the department and the King’s community. The Brown Bag performances are designed to give audiences the chance to enjoy a roughly hourlong theatrical production during their lunch break. Audience members are welcome to bring their lunches to the theater for the afternoon performances or dinner for the evening shows. Set once again in “Brother Jim’s Cafe,” a New York City cafe that doubles as a weekly open-mic club, “Who am I?” gives the student performers a fictional setting in which to share very real experiences. The six solo works touch on themes including loss, grief, finding meaning in life, the desire to be seen and heard and the pursuit of positivity. For Michael Smith, the production provided an opportunity to finally share something he had kept inside for years. “I am finally strong enough to speak my truth that I have held in my whole life, and Jahmeel was an amazing director to work with on this piece and my feelings,” Smith said. Ashlynn Fields-Clarkson said performing in the showcase has allowed her to explore her own identity while connecting with the audience. “Being a part of ‘Who am I’ has been an honor,” Fields-Clarkson said. “I am able to fully get to dig deep into who I am and be able to show it on stage to everyone.” Fields-Clarkson also will perform “Eternity” by Alex Warren, a song about the loss of a parent or family member. “I want to show people that no matter who they lost, they are still watching and are very proud of them,” she said. The production will offer audiences an opportunity to hear six individual stories while experiencing the intimacy of solo theater. Following the 7:30 p.m. performance Sept. 10, a “Meet the Cast” event will be held, featuring pizza and a free improv show beginning at 8:45 p.m. Tickets range from $8 to $20 and are free for King’s College students with identification. Reservations can be made through the King’s College Theatre box office by email at [email protected] or by phone at 570-208-5828. Tickets are also available online and at the theater box office the day of the show. Local journalism matters, and your support makes it possible.
