Колледж Кингс отметит 80-летие основания торжественной мессой в Уилкс-Барре

29 W North St King’s College will commemorate the 80th anniversary of its founding with a special Mass at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8, in the Chapel of Christ the King, 29 W. North St., Wilkes-Barre, with the Most Rev. Joseph C. Bambera, D.D., J.C.L., Bishop of Scranton, presiding. The celebration will take place exactly 80 years after the College’s first Convocation Mass, held on Sept. 8, 1946, at St. Mary’s Church, just a few blocks from the King’s campus. The Most Rev. William J. Hafey, then Bishop of Scranton, celebrated the first Mass and played an instrumental role in the founding of King’s College. Bishop Hafey invited the Congregation of Holy Cross to establish a Catholic college in Wilkes-Barre to provide educational opportunities for the sons of the region’s coal miners and provided critical financial support during the College’s earliest days. Eight decades later, the King’s College community will gather to honor that history and give thanks for the generations of students, alumni, faculty, staff, administrators, families, and friends who have carried forward the college’s Catholic and Holy Cross mission. During the Mass, the College will recognize alumni representing different class decades and pray in thanksgiving for the more than 24,000 graduates who have passed through King’s doors having learned not only “how to make a living, but how to live.” The celebration will also recognize the generations of faculty, staff, and administrators who have provided students with an academically excellent education, engaged mentorship, and the hospitable community that has defined the King’s experience throughout its history. The anniversary Mass will look toward the future of King’s as the College continues its mission of transforming the minds and hearts of students. Campus tours will be available at 2:30 p.m. before the Mass and at 6 p.m. following.
