German painter Kerstin Brätsch has been named the winner of the twentieth Zurich Art Prize. She will receive CHF130,000 ($161,000), of which CHF30,000 ($37,000) is prize money and CHF100,000 ($124,000) will go toward production costs for a solo exhibition by the artist at Zurich’s Museum Haus Konstruktiv, to open in June 2027.
Born in Hamburg in 1979, Brätsch studied in Berlin under Lothar Baumgarten and later in New York, establishing a practice that encompasses painting, sculpture, installation, performance, craft, and conceptual art. She is known for colorful large-scale works whose surfaces are marbled or covered in stucco, and for her collaborations with craftspeople and artisans, as well as with other artists. Among those with whom she has partnered are Adele Röder, with whom she cofounded the platform DAS INSTITUT in 2007, and sculptor Debo Ailers, with whom she has collaborated under the collective name KAYA since 2010.
Bratsch has been the subject of numerous solo exhibitions, most recently at Casa São Roque in Porto, Portugal (2025); Kunstmuseum Bonn (2025); and Munch Museum, Oslo (2025). Recent long-term installations by the artist include Fossil Psychic Stone Mimicry, a set of four mosaic benches through which plants are growing atop the roof of the Aspen Art Museum, where they are on view through March 2027; and MIMIKRY, an installation of curtains, sculptural tables, and temporary walls transforming the café area of the Fridericianum in Kassel, where it is set to remain in place through early 2027. Brätsch since 2024 has been professor of painting at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Hamburg.
The Zurich Art Prize was founded in 2007 and is presented annually by Museum Haus Konstruktiv and the Zurich Insurance Company to an artist whose work melds constructivist-concrete and conceptual traditions with contemporary styles. Past winners include Leonor Antunes, Rosa Barba, Kapwani Kiwanga, Carsten Nicolai, and Tino Sehgal.
