JGC wins JAXA study for next-generation space chamber system
KEY POINTS
- JGC Corp wins JAXA feasibility study for a next-generation space chamber system
- Study covers specifications, development planning and economics for a large thermal vacuum test facility
- Project runs through fiscal 2027 as Japan weighs updated spacecraft test infrastructure
JGC Holdings said on September 2 that its domestic operating company, JGC Corp, had been selected in August to carry out a feasibility study for a next-generation space chamber system under a Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency competitive bidding project.
The study will examine equipment and building specifications, development plans and economic viability for a test facility centered on a large vacuum vessel and related infrastructure. The project is scheduled to run through fiscal 2027.
Space chambers recreate the thermal vacuum conditions of space on the ground and are used to verify the performance of spacecraft such as satellites and space telescopes before launch. JGC said the importance of thermal vacuum testing facilities is increasing as spacecraft development becomes more active in Japan and overseas.
Large-scale thermal vacuum test facilities are limited in number in Japan. JAXA's Tsukuba Space Center hosts one of the country's largest space chambers, and JGC said the facility has been in operation for a long period, raising expectations that a next-generation chamber could become an important research and development platform for future domestic spacecraft programs.
JGC said it will draw on engineering, procurement and construction expertise developed through plant and facility projects to assess the proposed infrastructure from multiple angles, from detailed specification planning to construction planning and economic analysis.
The company cited experience in planning and building large-scale facilities handling cryogenic fluids, including liquefied natural gas plants, as relevant to the extremely low-temperature environments required for thermal vacuum testing. JGC has completed more than 20,000 projects in 80 countries and plans to use that project management experience to study optimization of functionality, quality, schedule and cost.
Knowledge accumulated through the study could later be applied to engineering, procurement and construction work if the project moves into implementation, the company said. In July, the group was also selected for another JAXA project involving detailed design and prototype testing for a ground demonstration plant aimed at realizing a lunar propellant production plant.
In May, JGC Holdings formulated its 2026-2030 medium-term management plan, Building a Sustainable Planetary Infrastructure 2030, which includes a push for further business expansion in the space sector. JAXA is Japan's national aerospace agency, and feasibility studies are commonly used by government-backed research organizations and public bodies in Japan to assess technical specifications, construction requirements and economic conditions before moving to full-scale procurement or development.

Космос враждебен к электронике из-за космического излучения, вакуума и резких температурных колебаний. Поэтому в бортовых системах космических аппаратов используется специальная космическая электроника, которая сильно отличается от обычной.
