Jessica Di Costa’s short film Mothmama has been selected to compete in the Orizzonti Short Films International Competition at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival. Produced by Undertow Content and Hard Copy Films, the film centres on the relationship between a mother and daughter, as their closeness, once tender and private, is slowly reshaped by the gaze of others. Amid a blurring of the bond between intimacy and performance, the daughter begins to feel the weight of being watched and the way connection can fracture when it is no longer only theirs. Gabriella Hirschson and Audley Anderson lead the cast. It is one of 13 short films selected for world premiere screenings in competition, chosen from 2,500 submissions received by La Biennale di Venezia, more than 200 of which were from Italy alone. The 12-minute film will screen alongside work from Italy, Hungary, Chile, Colombia, the US, Greece, France, Ukraine, and the UK, including Paper Plane, the directorial debut of actor Saoirse Ronan. Di Costa edited the film, working alongside cinematographer Harleigh English, production designer Eleni Thomas, costume designer Sharni-Lee Hope, hair and make-up artist Ana Silvia Reinke, and composer TKADM, with sound design and re-recording mixing by Jessica Meier and colour by CJ Dobson at Moodlab. Amanda Browne and Ashlee Russell produced the film, with Shaheera Huggins and Nell Nakkan serving as associate producers. In a post on Instagram, Di Costa said the film only existed because of the “generosity, talent and care” of her collaborators. “It is my greatest joy to make things with other people, and I feel so lucky to have made this one with such a special team,” she said. The Orizzonti short film selection, overseen by festival director Alberto Barbera, also includes two films screening out of competition. Official screenings for the short film selection will take place on September 10 and 11, with the Orizzonti Award for Best Short Film to be assigned by the section’s jury. Venice Film Festival runs September 2-12.
